Good thread! Generally I don't use flash at all, probablly because my internal flash is pretty much useless since I can't control it and it gives it a very obvious flash look to my images. If I can't get the photo right without it then I'm better of waiting for the lighting to change or moving a real light around. However, this past weekend I did something that I've never done before, something that was mentioned in this thread; I used flash outside on a bright day! The results were exaclty what I was looking for! The situation was that my subject was sitting under a tree on a hiking trail with a nice vista of a lake behind her. The beautiful background was very bright, but important that I expose correctly, and the shadows under the tree and on her face were very dark. I took two shots, exposing for the background and the foreground and planned to edit them together in photoshop but then I decided, what the hell, I'll experiment with the flash and see what happens. The result was exactly what I would have wanted. I probablly just got lucky this time but the experience did help me look at my flash, which I had considered useless, in a whole new way.

Plus, I have to admit that it feels like cheating when I use photoshop, only because I learned in the darkroom first :) Hope that feeling goes away soon, digital is certainly taking over.

that since it was less laborious to get things done, that somehow it's worth less? and does all this go back to the whole 'suffering builds character' ethic? :)

LOL, Mag. But, is digital editing really less laborious then darkroom processing? Also, I wouldn't consider darkroom work as suffering, I really rather enjoy it.
