I too was wondering about the 70-300 vs 70-200 f4 as mentioned in another thread, but since I don't always have my tripod handy and I also take photos while riding on the back of a motorcycle decided on IS. - I've checked the above mentioned lens - plenty of examples of the 75-300f4-5.6 IS but very few of the 70-300. Any opinions or advice as to why the 70-300IS over the 75-300IS. Thanks for everyones time and help on this.(In Canada these 2 are selling at the same price, but can't get an US price on the 75-300) Is this lens being discontinued?)
Thanks again. lyta |

I personally had the Canon 75-300 IS F/4-5.6 and well, it was good until i learned that it wasnt good, its really slow, you have to be in well lit situations, shooting at dusk or dawn with this lens and no tripod ,is a disaster, its really long when your focused all the way .
personaly you need to go play with one, hold it in your had, take your camera to the camera shop and put it on, take some test shots and see how you feel.

Thanks Troy,
Well, it would seem the 75-300 is discontinued so a bit miffed that it is selling at the same price as the 70-300 in Canada. Anyone have some sample shots using the 70-300 IS they'd like to share?

I bought the 75-300 IS USM last February and I really love it. I have nothing to compare it with and no L lens biases so for me, it's perfect. I don't know if it's been discontinued or not, but it sure has been good to me. It's definitely worth a look for the money. :) |

The 70-300IS is a new design. Optically it has excellent sharpness till 200mm and very good sharpness at 300mm.
Photozone.de has reviews with MTF charts of both the 75-300IS and the 70-300IS. To sum up their reviews, the older lens was very good at 70-200 and very bad at 300. It also had lots of CA.
Definately get the 70-300IS, I'd avoid the older version.
Oh, yes, I hear that the 70-300 is replacing the 75-300.

Taken with the 70-300 IS. I sold a 70-200 f4L to get this lens and I don't regret it for a second. The IS is worth every penny! I've never owned or used a 75-300 IS, but from what I hear the 70-300 IS is sharper.

cool deal,
just remember, the IS gives you about 3 extra stops in shutter speed and it's gyroscope is powered by the camera's battery, so if you leave it on during the whole shoot, it will drain the battery quiet a bit.
Have fun with the lens. |
