I'm curious why this shot didn't do better in the "silverware" challenge; I expected better of it. Comments, please?

I gave it an above average score for technical merit.

Didn't have enough WOW factor to score it in my highest group.

I felt threatened.

I gave it a 7, I liked it pretty well. The only thing I would have preferred is the background being in focus.

I'm as baffled as you are. It was one of my favourites in this challenge.

I didn't vote on this challenge Bear, but for a ginsu, the blade doesn't look sharp..

Good focus, but it is just too centered for me and doesn't hold my interest.

It should've been shown slicing paper or coins or both, then I would've bought the whole set.

I saw the shot and looked at it for a while. I found the background really interesting - the blue and the curves. But with the knife in the foreground, I thought it was blocking my view.
Why was I looking at the background when the shot was actually about a knife which isn't too small for me to notice? Could be because of the placement of the knife or because I am weird.
I found the knife itself interesting, with the shapes and the japanese text on it. For me, it didn't have the flow I was expecting (maybe I expect too much).

Strong Wusthof faction ?

I gave it a 6.

I think technically its great.

It has a somewhat artsy feel that I like, but it is too symmetrical for my taste. I think it might need something in it to be off balance to hold my interest. I don't find anything that catches my eye and then leads me to another part of the photo. The lines on the sides of the dish lead my eye out of the photo and then drop me there.

Should have cut a Coke can with it, Bear. You know how DPC'ers love Coke cans.

No Coke cans here; this is a Pepsi zone. But the comment re: symmetricality makes me laugh; in the past, such "artsy" shots have been penalized for NOT being symmetrical. And, for that matter, where is it written that one needs to be lead anywhere other than INTO the photo? Most people confront lines leading OUT by complaining that they don't lead IN...

I really like it Bear, I love the colors, I really like composition. Technically its perfect. Its a style of centered symmetry I personally love, seems not to be a big hit for many around here. I personally would have voted it high. But then again its a style I like:)

Robert you asked why your photo didn't score higher and I told you why I didn't score it higher. I wasn't suggesting that you didn't follow specific "rules of photography" and that therefore it was wrong. I said for ME it didn't work and gave you specific reasons.

Since you evidently don’t want comments with which you don’t agree, I will not offend you in the future by responding when you make this request.

I prefer not to be ridiculed for trying to be helpful. Silly me.

I wasn't ridiculing you at all. Sorry if it seemed that way. It was more of a general comment; seems like I get hung up whichever way I fo on that issue :-) Really! I was laughing not at the comment itself but at the futility I feel sometimes trying to figure it all out.

Peace :-)
