My Knife Fork Spoon entry was a tribute to a member that has done so much for various members and non-members on DPC over the course of her time here. In attitude, advice, and aspiration. Always with a good word, but never shy to jump in with her experience, advice, and words of wisdom whenever she feels the need, Laurielblack is a true inspiration to many, and one of this site's completely underappreciated members.

When teh Knife Fork Spoon entry was announced, I knew right away which shot, out of all of DPC, I needed to try and honor with a funny, parodic tribute. Laurielblack's "Outcast" in the Pain challenge.

This led to my shot:

The score was dismal, but I didn't enter for the score. I entered for the few people that would get this.. or remember it. I did it because Laurielblack, despite things that would leave many of us curled in a corner shaking, always has a positive thing to say, a joke to tell, a laugh to give, a constructive criticism to share, and/or a shoulder to cry on. If anyone on this site would appreciate a humorous copy of a blue-ribbon winning entry, it's her. Even if it isn't the most technical, smooth, fancy studio re-do there is.

The shot is dark, gritty, silly, and most importantly, it was done because I love laurielblack's work, and I love her presence here.

Thank you laurielblack for being you!

Hey Glen: you are true gentleman. I concur with you on the nice words and sentiments expressed. My first impression with Lauriel was her fantastic trumpet image. Look at those reflections. Then with the outscast she shone even brighter in the eyes of many here at DPC who consider her a special darling with a very up sense of humor and a display of wit. Now, that you point this out I see the intent of the message in your image. Most important the tribute you paid her. She is worthy of our admiration.

I agree with you gentlemen. Laurie is a wonderful person and makes everyone around her feel like they've known her forever and that they're her friend. She's a kind giving person whom I admire very much!

I love Laurie's work too, most of it any way.

" ... makes everyone around her feel ... that they're her friend."
Most of my friends reply when I send them a PM.

" ... worthy of our admiration."
I don't admire the position she takes whenever the issue of anonymity comes up. She has sorta made herself a poster girl for those who don't support the concept, and speaks out against any effort to strengthen it.

I have enjoyed seeing constant and significant improvement in her photography since she has been here. I think dpc has played a role in that.

Do you send your friends nice PMs or controversial/disagreement stuff? ;)

You don't admire people you don't agree with on everything? I'd be sprised if you admire any but yourself then? I'm not trying to be a jerk, but if that's the worst you can say - that she supports her own beliefs and not your beliefs, hell, she's perfect.

:)

That must make you the poster boy for those who do support it.

Artyste, interesting... I looked at your image a few times during voting and although I got instantly what you were conveying with it, it didn't work that well for me. I didn't see the connection to Laurie's photo, though I remember it well.

I won't critique the shot since I don't think you need it; firstly because you have already stated your reasons for entering and those reasons are what give the shot it's value for you and secondly, because you are more than capable of dissecting it on a technical level yourself.

I will "hear, hear" your accolade to Laurie, who is indeed a genuine and valued friend.

All I have to say is *you* do better with brushed metal silverware while laying on your stomach in the snow :) My goal isn't to do technically perfect photography.

A true gentleman, as always.
While I am still a newbie here, there have been few that have reached out with a friendly voice. Laurie has been one, Glen has been another, and a few more I won't name in fear that I will forget someone..LOL
For some people, this site is about the pictures and nothing else. For others, it's a place to meet people, converse, exchange ideas and friendship.
Myself, I want more than mere ribbons, I want to feel like I belong.
Laurie is a bright spot for all who meet her.

Awww thanks guys...and especially you, Glen, for being a sweetie and doing such a fine job with your parody. I loved your shot from the moment I saw it and thought it was a great idea for the challenge!

I have to say that this post brought tears to my eyes...I really love this place and the people here are important parts of my life. I've learned a lot about photography, some of which I can show in my work, some of which I can't as of yet...but by far, what I've learned the most about are human nature and the power of friendship.

To coolhar...no I don't seem to value anonymity as much as you do, but does it really matter to you THAT much what I think? What's important is that we each have a forum through which we can express our opinions without fear of persecution. As far as not responding to a PM from you, I can't even recall you PM'ing me where I didn't respond. I've had a busy summer and fall, so if it got by me inadvertently, my apologies.

Anyway, I really do appreciate all the kind words. This helps me realize why participation on this site is something I treasure. Thanks.

He he, not particularly...

These days I comment mostly on pictures that particularly appeal to me... I don't bother with the techie crits on images that don't appeal strongly - what's the point - too many DPCers making statements about the value of comments from those who aren't either ribbon winners or entrants themselves (because we all need to be able to build a car to understand whether one drives well) to waste my time...

I totally get that your entry was an emotional one and one in which the content was the most important thing - the message.

That's cool. Not all my favourite images are technically strong ones.

BTW I ain't been lying on my stomach in the snow taking pictures of cutlery but I have lain on my stomach on ice cold ground covered in penguin poo to take pictures! Is that close? :D

Some confetti thrown from my direction as well. I think it was a great gesture and I have a lot of respect and appreciation for Laurie as well - although I am going to test her PM responsiveness... ;-P

If I had any challenge related issues with Glen's shot, it would be that the title could have done without the "there is no spoon" part - that confused me, cuz I swear I saw a spoon. :)

Well, grammatically I guess it could have been, "there will be no spoon".. as it meant the spoon was being cast out.
