Hi,
I stubled across this forum a few days ago, seems a nice active one with a lot of good picture. So I think I try to browse here a little bit and see if it fits me ;-)
Now my question :
I have a problem with the SH function in PS. Sometimes I see a strange behavior of the function. It always appears when I have a picture with a not-normal histogram.
In short : The SH will always lighten the picture too much, regardless of the settings.
I included a picture underneath. Maybe it's a little but hard to see. But I do ask the darken the highlights by 1%. Instead of doing that the SH lightens the picture!! (see histogram)
Anyone any idea why it does what it does ? Or in other words : How should the histogram be so that I don't have this problem ?

Is there a way to emulate the shadow/highlight function in PS7? Doesn't matter if it's basic legal or not. Needed for personal use making prints, stock photos, etc.

I use the tutorial here on DPC which was suggested to me a while back with great success. Dont know about what you are using, I have PS7 and was nota ware that it had that capability, or are you using a newer version of PS?

Yes. Cntrl-alt-tilde (~) selects a feathered selection of the bright areas. Cntrl-J makes a new layer mask with that selection on it. Then go back to base layer, cntrl-alt-tilde again, cntrl-shift-I to invert the selection, and cntrl-J to make a new layer mask for shadows.
Set the shadow mask to screen and the highlight mask to multiply and adjust relative layer opacities to balance. If you are doing it on a flat pcture, first create a dupe layer from BG, amp up the contrast on that layer, do the selections and make the layer masks, toss the amped-contrast layer, and screen the highlight layer and multiply the shadow layer.
