I see photos in some challenges with borders but it seems many of those get knocked for having them. When is a border acceptable for use? Portaits, landscapes, still art?

never & always

hard to know

Best to keep them minimal if you use them. Usually black or white... maybe a neutral gray with the right photo.

I like them. They make an online photo look finished, like a print looks in a matted frame. But again, keep them very simple or you'll be shamed right off this site.

I like to keep a border. I have also done that with 90% of my submissions on dpc.

Pretty sure that my huge border on my Free Study knocked it down a bunch of points. Oh well.

I gave you an 8 and didn't even notice the border.

My free study got knocked for the border too.

Not as even as it could be, but i like it anyway :P

Boders often get criticized, but if you look over the ribbon winners it's about 50/50 with and without.

In my opinion as long as the border doesn't take anything away from the photo then it's ok. I got panned on one of my photos for a border and I learnt from that. Some borders are just way too think and ghastly for some photos.
