What reasons/conditions make you choose to use a spot meter?

major contrast or light and dark in a scene.

For creative exposures. My photography used to depend on spot-metering. The partial meter offered with so many DSLRs is a terrible substitute, for my purposes anyway.

Here are some examples of photos which were made using a true spot meter:

Using spot made the water black in this shot, that is the same duck, 3 images put together in PS.

How did a spot meter allow you to make the water black? Could someone explain this?

If you have a certain area of the image that you want to render precisely as a certain tonality, it's invaluable to be able to meter that area and calculate your exposure based on that area alone.
