Up until now, I've been a outdoor photographer, but I'm thinking about setting up a small area in my basement for studio type stuff. Nothing major, nothing professional. Mostly just some still lifes, maybe a few simple portraits of the kids.

Since I'm on a budget and don't want to go all out, I think I've seen people post on here (I just can't find it now) about using fairly inexpensive tripod work lights from Sears. Does anyone have any experience with this? Does it work well? Do I get one light or multiple lights?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Budget Lighting

Hope that helps some.

I have a couple of work lights I've used before.

2 are on a tripod kind of mount with a "T" at the top (a light on each point of the T) and I have 2 floor lights. All 500 watt. They were pretty cheap (I think I spent $100 on the lot of them).

Problems... VERY HOT. I haven't done much with diffusing them because I'm a chicken and I'm afraid it'll spontaneously combust anything I stick in from of them (including my models!).

Very yellow. You'll definitely need a custom white balance for them. I also recommend not mixing any other kind of light with them because of that.

I'm interested to hear what other people have to say too because I've also been interested lately in improving my shoestring studio.

I use those haolgens ... white garbaage bags suspended by coat hangers wrok great for diffusion. I actually made a diffuser holder out of PVC that goes on it now.

These shots were shot through the garbage bags

Also, I've had good results with bouncing them off homemade aluminum foil reflectors.

I still prefer to use the diffused natural light from a North facing window and using reflectors if I'm doing portraits though.
