I haven't flown since before 9/11. Actually, I haven't flown since... ummm... 1989. I'm planning on bringing my camera bag as a carry-on. Am I going to have trouble? |

Nope, It goes right on the scanner belt. Just remember not to put it on the belt until you can go thru the metal detector - you don't want it sitting there at the other end for too long until you can retreive it |

If you are going with someone. Have them go in front of you to watch your camera bag when it goes through, that way no one will snag it.

And keep your CF cards in the bag. The X-ray machine can't hurt them, but the magnetic field in the metal detector you walk through might.

Just flew to cancun last week.......carried all my camera gear on with no problem at all. They looked through it only once out of the 4 times I went through security. And that was only cause I was randomly flagged for an extra check. That guy that patted me down.....never called...didnt write........i feel so used!!!!!!!! |

If you plan on carrying on your tripod, I'd suggest making it readily available to take out. I had mine in my carryon and Denver security made me pull it out because the handle on it looked like a screwdriver(?) on the x-ray machine. Well, I had my dirty laudry packed on top of it........that taught them to mess with my stuff. But, going TO Denver, I had no such problem.
P.S. The others are correct. Camera, cards, USB cord, etc are no problem.
P.P.S. Read this, you may not be as safe as you once were. Small scissors and screwdrivers will be allowed.

Clinically, this is known as Paranoia. |

Traveling back through LasVegas airport last year the security was brutal! I took my memory cards out and placed them in the bin with spare change, my glasses, and other "pocket" items--no problem, they never passed through any magnetic field. I removed the camera from the bag and requested a hand-inspect.
As I padded through the security gate to the end of the conveyor belt in my stocking feet I had a wonderful reason to be amused....the so-called "security specialist" in charge of examining my camera couldn't figure out how to open the film chamber! Hahahahaha! I asked if she'd like me to show her how to remove the lens and open the battery chamber. Flustered, she shook her head 'no' and nervously handed my camera to me. With all items firmly in hand (including my sneakers and camera bag) I thanked her for her diligence and said in a stage whisper "it's digital"...then I quickly made my way into the departure area.
My tripod goes in my checked luggage. I don't need it on the plane and I certainly don't need the hassle from those who think I can turn it into a light saber! (Of course, it's a $40 Walmart special...but I don't need anything more elaborate or expensive for a vacation trip.)

Carrying on a tripod is a hit-or-miss situation. If your tripod has the retractible points on the legs, it needs to be in checked luggage. |

I think technically, it is known as learning from experience as some of these cases show.
Airport security at Brussels International Airport reported that two thieves exploited a contrived delay around the security X-ray machines. The first thief preceded the traveler through the security checkpoint and then loitered around the area where security examines carry-on luggage. When the traveler placed his laptop computer onto the conveyer belt of the X-ray machine, the second thief stepped in front of the traveler and set off the metal detector. With the traveler now delayed, the first thief removed the traveler's laptop from the conveyer belt just after it passed through the X-ray machine and quickly disappeared.

No; ours have been through plenty of airport scanners and never have a problem.
On the tripod front, we always put it into checked baggage; if you're not allowed knitting needles on a plane I'm amazed they'll let you on board with an extendable 4 foot metal club! |
