| looked at one of your shots and said how the he|| did I do this? I am one of the least artistic persons that I know, but for some reason, a camera brings out something that nothing else does... |

| i can't say about photos because i am bullshit as a photographer, but for paintings it has happened umpteen times. specially when the painting is gifted to someone and i visit him/her after year or so. I have wondered many times how the hell i can paint so good. Its strange feeling, since when i am doing it i know i can and gonna do it. But after it is finished i do not believe myself that i did it. Can't explain this much. |

I can identify with this. I painted for years when I was younger but when I went through a divorce I put down my brushes and never really painted much after that. I didn't have the time raising 2 girls and was too busy enjoying my freedom. I went to my ex-inlaws a couple of years ago and their walls are covered with my painting. If my name had not been signed to them I wouldn't have believed I painted them. Many of them I don't even remember painting. I wish I had them back now to hang on my walls. :) I only have a couple myself because I gave everything I painted as gifts.
I have always been a fairly creative person but don't feel like it shows much in my photography. I have a hard time coming up with creative ideals in shooting. |

No. But I often look at my shots after a shoot and think, how did I miss this one? Often, while shooting, I know what is crap and what is good as I go. Sometimes I know right after the click of the shutter that its the one I want. Once in a while, browsing through images, even old ones, I come to one and think, "I took this?" The fact that I didn't even know, didn't realize, reminds me that sometimes my subconscious/unconscious is a better photographer than I.
Good thing too. :)

| I have! Sometimes when I have something in mind or at least an idea of how I think it will look, It surprises me what the camera picks up. Textures and colors come through that I wasn't expecting and really throw me for a loop. I love it when that happens. Thats when I play around and really have fun trying to pull the most out of the effect. I have a picture for the next challenge that turned out that way. |

| No....I have never had that problem. I am learning and trying to get better and better at photography, so when I look back at a photo I took a year ago, all I can think is ..."oh geez, I can't believe I thought that was good." So it is kind of the opposite for me. I am not at your level I guess....I am such a perfectionist. |

Sometimes - I remember one particular shot that EVEN I knew at the time had no chance to even expose close to right (in film days with a basic consumer zoom lens - the only lens I owned). It was evening, no tripod, no remote release and I think ISO 100 or maybe 200 film; figured I should jam the camera against a fence as I hit the button. A few weeks later I get it developed and it turns out to be this amazing pic of a fountain with lights, flowing water and the deepest dark blue sky.
Now I have gear up to wazzoo and would be lucky to plan a picture like that one (on a good day :).
Sometimes you just get lucky :-) The talent to me is getting consistency and knowing the results BEFORE you see the pic.

BrenB, you've been one of my favorite photographers for a long time - I still get a chuckle out of Redneck Windchimes. That was very creative! |
