Does anybody know how to record an action that will automatically reduce the longest side of an image (whether the image is portait or landscape)

Hmm, I think that would be really tricky to do. How about this: maybe you could make 2 separate actions, one to run if it's portrait, and another to run if it's landscape. That might be the easiest way to do this I'm thinking. Thoughts?

Yea, I've got two separate actions. One for portrait, one for landscape. Resizes to 640 on one side, adds a border. I couldn't figure out how to tell it to resize the longest side.

same issue here, I have two separate actions for portrait and landscape orientations..
I would be watching this thread to see if anyone can give us a clever trick of finding the longest side

I found a work around for this.
The camer'as orientation sensor embeds a line in the EXIF that PS CS2 reads and rotates the image, as shot, when opened. If that feature is turned off in the camera, then they all open landscape mode, making the resize easy.
Only down side is that they will have to be selectively rotated propely after.

there's nothing wrong with ps7!!
As for the "fit image" not being highlighted, I don't know what to tell you.
All I did was start my new action, went to file-automate-fit image-and put in 640 pixels into both boxes-clicked ok and then stopped the action.
any help?

Do you have an image open? If not, open an image and check if the option is available. I don't remember much about version 7 now.

you might try resizing by percentage.
