I need the best lens that money can buy. Must be zoom starting at 18 and ending wherever(prefer long but can live with short). Used for the occasional landscape and walkaround. This is for a maxxum 7d.

Assuming they make these for the Maxxum cameras...

Sigma's 18-50 2.8 EX DC is very good. great for wide angle, indoors, landscapes. Not long on the 50mm end for any telephoto uses.

Tamron's SP 24-135 3.5-5.6 is xcellent in all regards, but not 18mm as you say you want. close though... Great walk around, does macro too!

The 18-200 class lenses are not 'quality' glass. Any 10:1 zoom is going to be a comprosmise of some kind, and on these distrotions and slow are the two most obvious shortcomings. for what they'll cost you can get better glass.

I have considered the Sigma 18-125mm lens for several months.

A word of warning. While users of good copies rave about this lens, there seems to be a lot of copy to copy variation. I have heard reports of folks returning several "poor" copies to get a "good" one. So I would only buy this kind of glass through a local camera store (i could try it first) or large retailer like BH that does not hassle on returned glass if a get a "not so good" copy the first time around.

Problem with returning a lens with mail order is the cost of shipping things back. Doing that can negate any savings in the first place. Perhaps if you are concerned about quality control of a lens design, you can goto a large local store, show them what B&H is charging and see if they can match that price or get close to it, you can also try the lens in the store with your camera before you buy it as well.
