have you tried glycerin & water 50/50 mix - it's better at clinging to things. though i dunno about the clarity of it in a macro like that.
that might have worked with the leaf.

Thanks Sander and Tim.....Tim, I used a glycerin mix for this one:
 but the result is a bit cloudy as you can see. The solution fell right off the leaf as well. Perhaps something more viscous (sic) but clear, but I do not know what that might be.
