This is a detail of a log I saw today. Where the bark has been stripped away, it was covered in little "designs".
I found all those little etchings very pretty, but would love to know what creature made them.
Any ideas?

Termites? Hmmm..... so what about the big lines vs the ones that look like centipedes? All made by termites, you think?

the big windy ones are most likely termites. Don't know about the branchy looking ones. Maybe larvae?

There are SO many kinds of wood-boring insects. Since this is a log, termites are actually not a likely suspect. Here's a site that shows many of the different species. Note that there are some drawings of their bores halfway down that resemble yours. I'm sure further research would reveal a site that actually identifies by boreholes.
