I purchased a second-hand D100 a few months back. It's a beautiful thing but I'm troubled by the body cap (for lack of a better term... the thing which closes up the camera when a lense isn't attached) as it is a simple and rather loose fitting white plastic cover. Considering that my lenses have spring-loaded latching caps, I'm surprised the body doesn't get similar protection.

Was this cheap, white, flexible plastic peice the original shipped cap or was it something the previous owner put on here? Either way, do they sell body caps that will firmly lock like the lense caps.

Same question for one of my lenses. My 35-135 has a black screw-on cap over the rear element. My new 50mm f1.8 has a flimst peice of plastic similar to that of the cap on the body.

My Nikon FG had a tupperware-like flimsy plastic body cap.

Just buy a good one, they are cheap

I donno about the digital Nikons, but back in the day that's allt he film nikons came with; a press-on, plastic cap. Canon comes with a "mounting" cap that has plastic flanges on it like a lens, so it mates solidly. These are available for Nikons also. Ditto the rear lens caps; Canon provides locking caps, Nikon didn't used to anyway, and they are available aftermarket as well.

It may be normal but it's not "OK"... Those stoopid press-on caps are always unpressing off, and bad things can happen. It's cheap to replace them, and good insurance.

Alright, good to know that I'm not the only one. I find it surprising though that my 35-135 has a good cap while the brand-new 50 doesn't...

That said though, I'll be buying new ones asap. Are they widely available or am I calling Nikon?

All the more reason to keep "lenses" on them.

Except the real problem is they come off the LENSES. I agree, a body cap's not needed that often, unless you carry an extra body, which is usually easier to fit in a kit sans lens.

Widely available. Any camera store that sells Nikon gear should have them. You can find them online easily also. Here's an e-bay seller that offers an OEM Nikon rear lens cap and body cap combo for 5 bucks plus 3.50 S&H, 1.00 S&H additional items in same order: Nikon Caps
