The following image was taken with a Canon Powershot S1 IS, first thing in the morning in light that was being diffused by a very thick fog. I was pleased with the digital version of the shot so sent it out for a print. I was very disappointed with what I got back. The areas of fog and the broadside of the dinghy are covered in small blotchy spots of pink and blue (not as it appears in the digital version). From a distance it looks fine, but close up it is horrible. At first I thought it might have been a result of some minor Photoshop adjustments I made. But, the original provides the same results. I should point out that I am not blaming the printer. I'm inquiring if there is something I can do to 1) fix this (maybe in photoshop?), and 2) avoid it in the future.

I am shooting in JPG, the color mode is RGB.

Regards,

Steven

What you are experiencing is digital noise. Low-light photography often has this problem in varying degrees depending on your camera and exposure settings. In general, the longer your shutter is open the more risk there is of digital noise.

Many people use a program called NeatImage to reduce digital noise; others use one called NoiseNinja. Photoshop may also have a noise reduction feature, I'm not sure.

It's a great shot - well worth working with.

Thanks. I played around with a demo of NoiseNinja and had a much improved version of the image in about 15 minutes. Bought myself a licensed copy. Much appreciated.
