âNudity. Nudity is an acceptable form of art on this site. Photographs may not, however, show a penis or a vagina or any acts of sex. Nudity should be presented in a tasteful manner.â

Does this rule only apply to pictures of humans or should for example a photo of an elephant in which you can clearly see its penis also be disqualified? And how about some animals mating? Should these also be disqualified?

I think the rule is mend to prevent users sending in photos which could be categorized under porno. Therefore I think it is allowed to submit pictures of animals having sex or pictures in which you can see their genitals.

What do you think?

I think you've been giving this a little too much thought :)

In the pencil challenge there was a photo of a horse penis. It was really really obvious, and the main subject of the photo. It was NOT DQed, (however there was a LOT of talk about it being controversial) so I would say that yes, it would be acceptable, but maybe not liked.
This is just my opinion, as all DQ requests are reviewed by the entire site council and others opinions might be different.

Nudity at ALL on this site is not really liked. lol I don't understand, but I guess "omg I may have been voting while my kid was around."

Your kid has a pencil. or other recognizable sexual characteristics. Hide them from it - yeah, cuz that's healthy and open.

Okay, so if the genitals are not the main interest of the picture it would be far safer (in the sense of not getting DQed and getting a higher score) than if the viewer couldn't avoid the horse penis at all ;).

Would this also be the case for acts of sex between animals? F.e. this image of two dragonflies: valid or not?

(btw this is not a picture of mine, just found it with Google)

And how about two lions?

(again not a picture of mine).

This ruling also predating the current wording of that rule.

Well mav, how would YOU feel if your mom told you you had a PENCIL? That can't be good for the ego.

When you're 5? I'd take a fully unsharpened pencil. ;)

Anyways - I was continuing the metaphor of pencil and elephant's..pencil.

"It's not a pencil!"

Ok, ok...magic marker, pencil, it may vary...

Either way, I'm all for pushing buttons.

There are some things which seperate humans from other beings...or there should be.

my educational background is in biology. so i say, if it fits the challenge, bring it on! the only risk you really run is getting a bad score.

I think nudity IS generally accepted on this site. However, nudity is hard to pull off, and it is easy to submit an average or mediocre image. There have been several shots that have done very well here that have nudes in them--I'm not speaking of animal nudity, by the way!

nudity is fine. it's 'frontal newts' i can't handle!

I've seen nudes do well on this site... Nudes that are well done will be well accepted.

However, nudes that are done poorly or for shock value or to pander to the 14 year old male vote will normally get hammered by voters.

The photos of the animals mating made me cringe not cause they aren't good but because of something that happened when my little boy was in kindergarten. LOL and before anyone asks my little boy saw his Grandmother's Boston Terriers "mating" (for a lack of better words) and he went to school and explained in detail how dogs make puppies! Lucky for me it was Grandma's day to pick him up after school and the teacher told her about it and she was the embrassed one cause she left him watch although at least she explained it all to him...

Remember if you submit something like that for a challenge there are a few rather young voters and photographers, yes I know they can see these kind of photos in National Geographic but with NG there is a caption and a story explaining it.

I do think the nudes do well here when they are very tasteful and appealling to both male and female but when they appear to be selling flesh and not the body artistically then the scores are low.

Photography is a way of self expression and using the nude human body has been done since the very beginning. I think that DPC is very open by accepting nudity here and I applaud the admins.

I personaly think that children should be exposed to fine art nude photography with their parents present to educate them. But that's just me. :-)
