Hi everyone. I was wondering if anybody would like to be part of a comment club with me. The way it works is if you would like to see more comments on your portfolio, then you would sign up here, then as more people add themselves, we would each mark them in our favorite photographer in our portfolio. Each week we would make comments on our favorite photographers work. It would be up to you to review the favorites to see who has not received many comments, and try to make comments on those ones. We could help each other out with techniques, composition, exposure and all the photographic techniques to become better photographers. I am heading to work right now, but I will be checking in tonight to see if there were any takers. Hope to see some names.

Another thing, at any time if you don't think you want to be part of it anymore, just remove our names from your favorites list. I will be reposting this every so often in case anybody new wants to join. If we end up with a lot of activity (though it appears once again nobody is interested, which is the story of my life) then we can split into smaller groups and have about 10 or 20 for each person in the club.

There's a comment club available for all to join now. It's called the critique club! They can always use more active members!

What is the Critique Club
The more members we have making critiques, the more photo will get critiques. There are currently 337 photos waiting for critiques. You should try it out.

The problem with what you are suggesting (I thought about this all morning) is that I already have quite the list of favorite photographers on my list. There is no way for me to seperate the comment club ones from the current ones especially if someone that is already a current favorite from way back joins up with this idea.

It's not a 'bad' idea, just needs a better way to keep track of who belongs and who doesn't.

And I know the Critique Club was mentioned but the flip side of that is that unless you mark your picture for a critique, it won't get one and even if you do, there's no guarantee you will get one.

I think the best way for you to work this is to do what other's have done, you have a shot that didn't do well but didn't really get any comments as to why? Post it to the forums and tell everyone that for every constructive, thought out (not just, bad lighting, soft focus..) critique you would be willing to look at their work and offer the same. Try to do this once a week or get others to do it and join in that way. Then it stays fresh, people get feedback on specific shots and everyone is happy!

If there was a big enough "club"...

Good advice, but critique club is only for challenge entries. I personally, would like a venue for other critiques from the people of this site. I am not sure I like the post it to the forum technique, though I've used that successfully in the past. It would be nice to have a "special" portfolio folder set up in everyone's portfolio called "Critique Call" or something like that. At the site level, going to a special menu option under "Community" would bring up all the shots in everyone's critique call folder. And as an incentive to leave critiques, each time you leave a critique, one your own portfolio entries gets bumped to the top.

Or something like that!

I like nshapiro's idea. I'm not sure why, but the critique club has always seemed oddly exclusive to me. Why do you need to join a club to offer in depth critiques? Are there standards for joining the club that make their critiques better than anyone else's? Why can't you request a critique of a non-challenge entry? I've never really fully understood the critique club, and as such have never asked for a critique or tried to join the club, even though I like getting and giving in depth comments.

I think it would be excellent if you could check a box on any portfolio item (challenge entry or otherwise) that says something like "request in depth critique". That image would then be added to a pool of images that all users (members and non-members) could access (perhaps under Photos or Learn or maybe Community) when willing to give in depth comments. I say pool rather than queue, because I think it would be best if it were like challenge entries where each user sees them in a random order, rather than an ordered list, such that every image that has an in depth critique requested has as much chance of getting one as any other (since I expect demand would out weigh supply).

Just my 2-cents since as a newbie, I have been seriously thinking of joing the CC and also leaving comments where possible. My hesitation about CC is beco' I think to do a critique justice, you'd need to at least be comfortable about some levels of photographic techniques and skills which I'm not. CC serves a great purpose and I appreciate those who do it but general comments that are shorter, from a wider audience (experienced or otherwise) serves a different purpose. With my demanding work, it's also easier for me to leave short feedback rather than leave analytical critiques.

So, yes, I'm all for the idea of reciprocal comments where possible.

Sounds like a cool idea. I think highly of the Critique Club, I think they go above and beyond the call of duty and I highly appreciate the couple of critiques I received in the past. But getting detailed critiques on non challenge photos would be really cool sometimes.

The forums are a great place to get feedback also, IMO, but I think there is plenty of room for something like this also. One suggestion I might add though: I could just imagine if it were available, a lot of folks would want to have like almost all of their portfolio in line for a critique :-), you might end up with a better chance of hittin' the lotto :-P ...so maybe there should be a limit, like even as low as one or two photos that a person could have in the 'pool' at a time?

This is a great idea, that way you have to really think about which ones you want the most help with. You might think it's the best shot ever taken but someone else might come along and say, "Really nice, love this or that but I noticed............" and see something you missed.

And like it was said before for every comment you leave, one of your's gets bumped to the top of the list or up the list one or two spaces.

Here's a suggested refinement, taking the best from all the suggestions below. I call this the Zero Growth Critique Club.

1) You have a checkbox on all of your images you can set, "Request for Critique"

2) If you check it, you are putting it in a queue, like the critique club queue, but separate

HOWEVER:
2a) in order to get a critique, you must belong to this club like the critique club admissions.
2b) you get two "free| critiques. After that, you must provide a critique to one in the queue for each one you get.
2c) to count as a critique, the user must check "comment was useful", or a new checkbox, if it can be made available.

Rather than a bump to the top, the stipulations in item 2 would mean that there will be a stable rather than growing number of items in the queue.

Or something like that ;)

Definitely a good idea =)

I love this idea - i hate shoving my pics into people's faces and asking them to tear it apart... a place where that is expected would make me feel much better about it.

I have thought about joining the critique club... but i dont feel i know enough to be of any help.

All you need to know is what you like/dislike and be able to explain yourself. It doesn't have to be technical.
