*whine*
Just my luck. I had a person interested in using one of my photos for advertising. Seemed like a legit company. I checked out the website and everything. I figured it would be worth a fair amount and was very happy!
I was contacted initially from a user here at dpc, who had left a comment on that photo (at my pbase gallery.) The advertisement guy had contacted the commenter, trying to track down the photographer. I'm not sure why he couldn't get me directly, as it's easy to get to profiles at pbase.
Anyway...the commenter forwarded the email to me and I responded right away to the ad guy (he had said he was on a deadline.) I said I needed information regarding what usage was planned before I could quote a price and/or availability.
Got an email back tonight saying that due to the deadline, they went with another photo (Getty?).
Whaaaaaaaa! It seems like this whole year has been money *that* close to coming to me...and then slipping away. ~sigh~ I'm a Realtor, and I have had almost $1,000,000 in property sell JUST before I got the listings. All sold by the owners who weren't actively looking for buyers, just getting properties ready to sell (using my advice). One sold to the guy who came to clean carpets, one sold to a neighbor across the street who then listed THEIR home with a different Realtor (her sister)...etc. etc.
I have done the best I can in all these situations, I believe, but sometimes the "what ifs" (like the almost photo purchase today) just starts to get to me a bit. All told, it's probably another $15,000 I coulda almost had this year. blah.
On the bright side....I have a nice home, a nice car, a great family, made more in photography than I had any goal of doing at the start of the year, and a career I enjoy and do well with. I guess I'm just greedy. Actually, I just keep envisioning the dslr I want! :) |

Judy, I'd say you are doing quite well... Despite your own impressions. :-) You are very talented and have managed to turn a hobby that you love into a part-time profitable business. You have a wonderful family - and after meeting you I know you enjoy life to the fullest! So, try to continue to enjoy each day. You're making much larger strides than you give yourself credit for... Rather than looking at what "they" have, try to look at what "you" have. It may sound trite and contrived, but given my knowledge of you and yours of me, I think you know that I'm sincere. You have a lot to be thankful for. Don't get me wrong - keep striving for the brass ring your heart truly desires, but I think you've got a pretty good hold on one already... ;-) |

Jimmy,
You are very right, of course. And each one event didn't garner much time or attention from me. After the one today, the accumulated disappointments just ticked me off a bit and I just wanted to blow off some self pity.
I am without a doubt an incredibly blessed lady. I hope I never really lose sight of that. I knew some wonderful folks, like yourself, would remind me about those blessings :) It's really just a little whine, that's all. I'm done now. Really.
By the way....if I never make so much as another penny with photography, I'd still gain so much enjoyment from it! And with digital, I can shoot forever without spending another dime if I so desire.
By the way, thanks. |

Just keep reading this over and over again... :-) I hear ya though Judy and every once in awhile we all have to vent. Things will turn around, probably when you least expect it. That's the joy of life, isn't it? :-)

And of course, EVERYONE deserves to blow off some steam... I certainly do it FAR too frequently!!! I don't think I've EVER heard you do it on here, so I'm probably being a real heel for even mentioning anything like what I did to you - I have no right... You are always so gracious, giving, and conscientious. Please forgive me for being so presumptuous. Rail away! LOL

yeah, keep your head up. all of those "almosts" will make your "gotchas" that much sweeter.
i had a friend that got her degree in a field that's very competitive. she wallpapered her one wall in her apartment with rejection letters from companies to which she had applied for jobs. when she finally got a job (with one of the best companies in the field, by the way), she got quite a kick out of turning to her rejection wall and saying "hey...f*&k you!" it was quite the self-esteem boost.
ok, so you may not have a "f*&k you" wall, but the concept is the same. you can just keep in mind that you're gonna hit it big and some day all of those "almost" people are gonna regret not working with you. :) |
