Hi!
I have some experience in black-and-white film photography but I'm interested in getting into digital photography. Do you have any suggestions for a good starter camera (please keep in mind that I'm on an extremely limited budget) or any other equipment you think I would need? I'm also completely open to any tips or advice on digital photography in general.
Thank you so much. I'm sure I'll love being part of the DPChallenge community! |

Welcome to DPC! :) I am getting my daughter a Canon A520 for Christmas. We gave it a test drive in the store, compared it to Olympus, Kodak and other cameras and felt for the money ($179) it would be a great camera for her to use. The zoom was really nice, the camera had all modes from all manual settings to many automatic settings. If I remember right it is a 4 mp camera. I hope this helps. |

Take up bowling instead. It's much cheaper!
Just kidding, The Canon S1 IS can be had for $250, less if found used on ebay. It will do everything you want and will be a good camera to use to figure out if you want more of a camera.
My best advice, don't use the auto modes and figure out what all the buttons do as soon as possible.

I just got an Olympus SP-310 for under $300. It's just something to keep in my purse for me, as I'm an SLR user, but I can see how this would be a good camera for a new user to grow with. It's got easily accessed manual, shutter priority, and aperture priority modes, which are good things to start trying to understand (or things you may want to use a lot if you've done film photography). I can see how it might be a good camera to learn and grow with as it seems very flexible. Lots of shooting modes and some options for add on lenses and things like that. It's slightly more expensive counterpart, the SP-350 even has a flash hot shoe (unusual for a small camera like this).
In general, you need to consider what you want to do with the camera:
-Do you want to carry it everywhere with you? Use it for snapshots, travel?
~Pick something compact
-Do you want to learn advanced and/or artistic photography?
~Pick something with a manual exposure mode, as well as aperture priority and shutter priority modes.
-Do you want lots of options when you shoot? The ability to be near or far from your subject or to vary the lighting?
~Choose something you can add adapter lenses and external flashes to.
-Do you want complete control? Something that can completely change and grow with you?
~Look for an SLR |

Bowling is not cheap...I tried that once. Those balls are expensive, then shoes, etc...

Check Resellers Ratings before purchasing from a particular store.

Two accessories I would consider would be a larger memory card (cameras usually include small ones that do not hold very many pictures) and a spare battery (or if it uses regular batteries, an extra set of rechargable ones) since you will eventually go out without recharging and miss a great shot. The great thing about digital is no need for buying film. It does not cost to take another shot so you can keep trying to get a better one. Shoot lots and enjoy! |

The new Canon powershot A series is also quite good. I think they are called the Canon Powershot A520 now or something.
If you feel inclined, you can get a little telephoto lens or wide angle lens to get the feel of working ind igital and stuff. Then you can move on to dSLRs! J/K
I started with the Canon Powershot A70 which is an early version of the one I mentioned, and loved it.
Second JeffryZ comments about a memory card and batteries. If you get a AA camera, be sure to get rechargables. They last longer, apparently speed up the camera, and are ultimately cheaper
Happy shooting! |
