Dell Computer (which was a nightmare for ordering...

I found numerous people who had either the Error99, Error01, or undocumented Error00 while using Canon's 70-200mm f/2.8 IS in conjunction with the 20D. (IMHO, I think it's at almost a high enough rate to qualify for a class action suit and I think Canon is trying to mitigate the matter.) And quite a few others who have had said error99 in general. I know some are due to the blocking of the pop-up flash in Auto modes. (Not an issue in my case.) Or communication issues with lenses (and Canon gives a blanket declaration that such can occur when using non-Canon lenses). But the 20D does seem to have a higher occurrence than either model to the side of it (Rebels or 1Ds)

Did you try re-installing the firmware? I think its at version 2.0.3....
11/14/2005 04:38:06 PM · #29
I had updated it just a few months ago before sending it to Canon the first time.

As for this time, not sure how I can update the firmware when I can't even get into the menu system. It's all dead...no menu, no playback, no little red focus boxes, nada.

Doesn't seem like you're the only one with this problem. Though the error 99 message is a generic one, it seems from the Google search I just did that many 20D owners are getting them.

I got a 99 message for the first time on 12 November as well - but a battery removal and 2 min wait seemed to fix my 20d. Irritating as I was taking the photos at a friend's wedding at the time, but not as bad as Jason's experience.

Just curious, was it with an IS lens?
11/16/2005 09:59:35 AM · #32
I think that it was with my new Sigma DG EX 20mm 1.8. It was also with my new battery pack. Though I could be wrong, and it could have been an the Canon 17-85mm IS.

Thanks for the warning on possible IS issues.

Definitely keep an eye on any future occurrences and not whether it is your Canon 17-85mm IS.

If there is such a place available in your area, a full service camera store that takes care of its customers would be worth the extra expense in your case. (What with the curse and all :)

I buy my cameras online and take my chances, but I buy lenses through a local shop and pay the insane markup simply because I can test the very lens I will buy. Costs a lot more, but fewer surprises. And if the lens did foul-up in the warranty period I could take it back to them and let them play patty-cake with Canon or whomever.

i'd have to agree even though i own a canon, there is alot of griping on here about them and their failure to ship and return items fixed.

Well, I move in 6 months anyways...

2nd, I wouldn't want to kill the last decent camera shop in my area (all the others went out of business...even the Ritz is gone).

And my luck is that I buy things and the companies soon thereafter go bankrupt. *lol*

Crazy Eddies (bought my $100 walkman when I was 13...his prices were insane, shortly thereafter the chain went belly up and my Walkman decided to start playing my cassettes backwards - which is great if you have old beatles albums on cassette but useless for enjoying my music. And being 13 that was a big investment. Actually, I had a series of dead SONY equipment (as did my parents and many friends) and 20 yrs ago I boycotted their products. I think most of their consumer stuff is junk.)

I second that, all they know how to do is make TVs and monitors.

I had the Err99 with my 50mm 1.4, mi dissapointed about all these problems with the 20D. Hopefully canon will fix your problems ASAP.

Well... the 20D is packed in the box with the UPS ship ticket on it waiting for pick-up this evening. Let's see how long it takes for Canon to get it back too me.

*grin*

My new camera died showing Err99 after two days. It certainly sounded to me as though the shutter mechanism had died. No matter what, it wouldn't properly boot up. Fortunately the camera chain from whom I bought it did an immediate exchange. I was lucky in that respect. I feel your pain.

Wow, then let me tell my story. As a 15 years old I also invested in a walkman which was playing everything well but with a loud humming sound.
For 3 months I went to and wrote to every possible place without any result ! It stayed like a mental scar with me for a long time, not the loss of money but simply the way big shops and companies treat their customers. It was a Philips.

When i was 15 years old i could repair walkwans, humming could be removied by adding a capacitor as correct place. (that costed mere 15 cents that time). :-)

Well, it looks the free study will my only challenge entry this month (as it's an open period and I have some photos I took the very first week before my camera died).

*sigh*

:(

So many great challenge topics this month too...I miss shooting!

Well, I just received notice that they "received" my camera and to expect it's arrival in approx. 7 days after stated date.

Received:
28-NOV-05

*argh* UPS delivered the camera and was signed and received on November 18th. I want my !@#$% camera. It's been almost 2 months since I've been able to use it. This is getting really annoying.

Maybe I should have bought this Cannon instead?

2 Months!!! Yikes, I would be going a little crazy too. Hope you get it back soon.

BTW - glad you enjoyed this pic. ;^)

It was a very nice cannon...

"Purple Smoke" by Barry Baugher

Which, I now realize = glad2badad *lol*

(by the way, I figured out how to link to the DPC print from the photo so I modified the post)

Just curious? Is that a prime? how many mm? and what's the aperture on that thing? got to admit, that's one helluva tripod mount it's resting on!
