Thank you John for the tip!
The topic, as I see it, is 'unusual'. Good luck to all planning on entering. |

Have they hosted previous challenges that we can view to get a taste of what they consider "unusual"? I've never entered something like this and it would be fun to give it a try. |

Your best bet is to abandon your current mindset and submit something YOU think is unusual :) |

I thought my current mindset WAS something unusual. Oh well... back to flowers and cats. ;-) |

Aw John, a little peering into a judges eye can go a long way. ;)
I have an idea I've been wanting to do for one of the shots. Now I have to come up with 3 others...
Here's a follow-up question. Do you think they are looking for the 4 entries to have a common thematic or stylistic element? The picture they show of their wall shows 4 hand drawn faces. I wonder if they want 4 pictures which employ whatever your "unusual" take is on 4 different subjects.

I don't know. I have never bothered to second-guess what the theme is when I enter these competitions. I submit whatever I think works. I never know who the jurors are or what they like. I think it's a bad idea to try to read into the theme. Take it at face value and proceed :) |

Thanks for these tips. I have no visions of being a great artist/photographer, but you never know what might happen. I don't even have a DSLR, but have managed to gain some recognition this year in local competitions. I would highly encourage anyone to take the chance. At worst, you'll have a nicely printed and displayed photo that you like. At best, you will gain some prize money, experience, and honors. I seldom regret anything I've done, but instead regret NOT doing things I wish I HAD done!
I have made $400 this year in two juried competitions. One was free to enter, the other was a whole $10. The first was actually only open to amateurs, the second to anyone. I received first place in the b/w catagory for the first one (for amateurs, $100 prize)
The other competition I won first place (against "pros"!) with a prize of $300! I also had one of two "honorable mentions" in that compeition (no prize).
Those were the only two I entered, and won them both! |
