This image was shot a week too early for the At Work challenge. How would it have faired if I could have entered it?

Nice shot. I think you might've gotten some complaints though. I think most voters would complain about the shot being too cluttered, in other words, there being too many things to look at, detracting from the main element.
The lighting is ok, but could be better. The bright spot in the centre, and the light reflected in the glass doors of the cupboard are a little distracting.
Lastly, and this is really a matter of taste, I would have left the little girl out. IMO she doesn't add anything to the shot. I think she also detracts from the main focus, ie, the artist hard at work. The fact that her legs are cut off, adds to the feeling of her not really belonging in the photo.

All in all, I would've scored it a 5. :)

it would have been DQ'ed ;)

In all seriousness, though, I think it is an extremely good shot, that would probably have ended up in the top 10.

While Martus has a few good points, I see this as a journalistic challenge more than an artistic one. As an editorial shot, this is simply fantastic. THe lighting is beautiful, it is clear what he is doing and you can see him concentrate. I would have given it a 9 or a 10.

I think it is a nice shot. It shows the artist in his surroundings, and the inclusion of the little girl watching him grounds the viewer to the artist and his current work. Colors are good, depth (with the other paintings in the background) is excellent. Angle is decent. The glare on the cabinets doesn't bother me. Why? Because I know it is not a studio shot. It is candid.. photojournalistic. Life isn't perfect, but the subject matter retains my attention enough to ignore it. - 9

I think it's a really good shot, too. I also probably would have left the little girl out so the viewer could concentrate on the main subject. I don't, however, consider the shot cluttered at all, considering that the "clutter" is mostly artwork and not like, dirty dishes or stacks of paperwork or anything... I think the artwork all around really adds to the shot. It probably would have gotten an 8 from me. A 9 without the little girl.

I mostly agree with Martus, though my final would have been a 6. how did you light this? It seems to me there may have been a falsh used (perhaps as a fill) but it casts some distracting shadows. I don't mind the girl there, nor the fact that she is legless. the reflection in the glass cupboard is distracting.

an alternate idea:
I love to shoot from odd angles (my photographic-hero taught me this) to give a perspective not seen by every Joe who happens upon the situation. standing on that chair on the left and shooting from above would allow you to include all of the nice elements that are already in there, cut out a few you could do without, and even add afew (such as the girls expression, and to satisfy some - her legs :) )

anybody else?

I would score it an 8. Very interesting and I don't find it too cluttered. It shows the artist and his surroundings. Is the girl the subject that's being added to the work?
