So as someone who obviously can take a quality picture, why are you entering shots you already admit are suboptimal? Can you identify the characteristic that needs improvement? Lack of creativity? Lighting? Set-up?

Just trying to light a fire under you...

certain subject matter - i think - will lose you 1/2 to a full point.
as is the case i think with this entry of mine.

my girlfriend guessed a 6.7 on this entry- i guessed 5.6 which is where it's at.

Eh don´t sweat it, I am quite sure your time will come (in regards of a ribbon), I first noticed your work in "silhouettes II" and peek at your profile now and then, funny how 3 out of 4 of your top shots are of glasses, you have so many other good ones :)

I often submit images that I know won't garner a high score. It's not the points I'm after, but the reaction of viewers. Several times I've tried something different (for me, anyway), just to see how it might be received - hoping for some interesting comments that tell me whether my audience sees it the same as I.

...So it's not so much that the photos are "suboptimal"; rather it's the opportunity to try things to see how they're received.

(Of course, I'm not answering for Beagleboy - he has his own reasons.)

I think that's fine, but then I would scratch my head as to why he was wasting his time posting to a silly thread like this. These score threads are for the update addicted and those who take great pleasure in high scores. It was mainly that juxtaposition (his outlook being posted on this thread) that had me curious.

thanks !! - not sweating it. in my opinion, it is technically sound, has a clear eye leading aspect, and will strike specific emotion in anyone who looks at it.

i look at these threads to gauge the possible scoring trend - high or low. probably not real accurate, but somewhat of a gauge.

The image I submitted is fine, thank you very much. Actually quite good and I would give it a slightly higher vote than it's receiving now if I had to vote on it. I knew from the get-go that it would probably score sub-6 since images that do well here are for the most part very bubble gum (nice purdy pictures) or, as the case has been lately for the increasing use of grunge and draganizing, sour candy. Which is completely fine with me. I respect skill when I see it.

Not dumping on anyone's creative style or the voting community's voting pattern, just telling it like I see it.

Unlike those here whose main goal (could have used "sole goal", but didn't), is to shoot for a ribbon or score very high, mine is simply to submit the best image I can with the time and resources available to me while enjoying myself. I try not to submit "garbage shots", although I have done so a few times in the past.

I am an amateur armed with pretty good equipment, a little bit of skill and a little bit of time to pursue this hobby. I have noticed that I used to be able to better compete (score higher) in the past. The caliber of winning shots has increased dramatically over time here on DPC, meaning that my shots score lower than they did in the past. Shots that would have ben guaranteed a 6+ score maybe 18 months ago are now sub-6.

I'm glad that some photogs have been able to evolve and keep up. I think my photos are good as they ever were, it's just that's it's harder to score higher with all these talented photogs around. Not sad or bitter about it. On the contrary, I very well realize that, just like everything else in life, there is always someone out there who is, according to others, slightly better at what they do than you are.

This doesn't incite me to quit photography. On the contrary, it stimulates me to get out there, shoot, process and learn. With this said, I will continue to submit shots that, according to me are quite good and that meet my "standard".

Thanks for asking the question.

Nothing to boast over, I know, but I did have one comment where someone thought I just made up a title to fit the theme. NOT true. That title was there even for another contest in the same time frame, and it fits the photo & theme perfectly. Unfortunately, my photo is one that makes you think and look and seek, not to mention it is sharp, crisp, and well done if I do say so myself. I don't think a lot of people take the time to go beyond a first glance, BUT such is the life of a contest with so many entries you have to buzz on by and vote sporatically. LOL....

It's my first contest here, so I won't wimper about it. I am actually ok if I just stay in the 5's. Hopefully that will happen soon, but please, take the time to REALLY look at the photos before just half hazardly voting and commenting simply because you can instead of doing it with seriousness. Another commenter said they couldn't even see the corrolation to the theme? THEN another said that it set the theme and mood so well, they gave it a 10! SO diverse are the comments its kind of funny actually.

With an online community the size of DPC and the geographical scope there will be a wide range of diversity. That's one of the plus sides here IMO.

Good luck on your challenge entry. Could break 5 before it's over and that's not a bad start. ;^)

Well, that didn't last. I'm still happy with my score but I'm way out of ribbon territory now.

Well, that is still a pretty sweet score JPR...

I found the bottom last night and start that long climb back up the hill for the rest of the week.

I haven't gone up once yet that I've noticed. I seem to be taking a slight drop at the end of challenges lately too. Used to be I would get a little bump up as some votes were thrown away. Looks more like people have been coming on and giving me high scores and not voting on enough photos to have their score count.

Anybody that gave me a 10, GO FINISH VOTING!
