I am practing taking photos of a mother and her children. I need some suggestions on what to do for my first time. I dont have all the high price equipment, but I do have a Nikon 7600 coolpix camera with photoshop elements 3.0. What can I use as a backdrop? What can I use for this assignment?

Let nature be your backdrop... the fall colors are great now, and you can't go wrong with natural light. Pick someplace that is nice with some shade, use a white piece of posterboard for a reflector if necessary to light up their faces. I would go out early in the morning or late in the afternoon for sure so that the light is most attractive. I wouldn't go out after about 10am or before 5pm (of course this depends on where you are, but here it's harsh sunlight time during those hours). Try various poses, depending upon the number of kids and their ages...let Mom sit with a little one in her lap, an older one standing next to her with his/her hand on her shoulder, something like that. Have fun with it and don't worry...since it's for practice, it's all good. :)
