Hi - Not trying to make waves here. Just have a bonafide question.

Does a landscape always represent a wide open view of distant lands?
Can it be for example, a shot of a hilltop, maybe a landscaped hillside of flowers...something not more than 50 yards across or deep?

Just wondering...don't have any expansive vistas here. Thanks.

I'm not sure if its an artistic definition, but in America, the treatment done to the grounds around your house is referred to as landscaping. The hard part should come with the definitions of cityscape and seascape.

I agree with deapee.

I don't think that a landscape has to be a vista or panoramic view.

i consider this a landscape shot :)

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Part of my curiousity was also driven by verbiage I've seen on other photo sites. For example, on ShutterPoint they post requests from buyers and one of the requests not too long ago was for a "landscape" and then they went on to describe the colors wanted, not wanted, etc... Some of the details made it sound like a woodland shot would be considered a "landscape"?

I would aruge that there are many different types of landscapes, including the grand, scenic views that we're all accustomed to, but also landscapes that focus more on one part of a scene.

Consider this shot below. I would consider this a landscape, though some may disagree with me:

That's what I was thinking about Justin. Not always large vistas of rolling hills, mountains, or big blue skies. Don't get me wrong...I'd love to find some good uncluttered space, but what you've posted is more in line with what's available locally. Maybe I'll have to hop in the car tomorrow and venture off into the hills. ;^)

If there's a building in the photo, is it still considered a landscape?? I know that sounds kinda silly I guess...but for instance, in the Midwest there are lots of crop fields and many are dotted with barns or silos. Can shots like that still be a landscape?

I take lots of landscapes with barns and other stuff in them. It may not be someone elses ideal, but I think if the photograph is strong, then building element should actually add interest to the shot.

Our county and state fairs both have "Landscape with Structures" and "Landscape without Structures" categories every year. I've won the "with structures" category at the county fair twice with these:

//home.comcast.net/~ldka/farmfair/2003/concordsunset.jpg

//www.lighthousing.net/albums/First-Light-2005/715am2442.jpg

Both are fairly close-up, not even wide vistas. Heck, one is even in portrait orientation!

Was browsing some DPChallenge photo galleries and did you know that the 'Landscape' gallery is the third most populated with 11000+ photos coming in behind 'Nature' and 'Black and White'?

Some examples of what other DPC'rs consider 'Landscape' images:

Just food for thought. ;^)

So, is cityscape considered a lanscape shot? I am going to Chicago tomorrow, so I thought I'd just ask.

I think it is important to note the word "land" in landscape. I considered doing an urban landscape shot, but it just doesn't make sense. It really should be a wider angled, natural, preferably not portrait in setup but landscape, shot that incorporates a lot of land or sky. But I probably am not entering into this one, and thought I would give some people the heads up on what is most likely to be wanted....

Thanks Cutter, I was thinking the same thing. I guess I'll just have to find a bunch of garbage down there. That shouldnt be too hard to do.

I don't think that the orientation matters but as Cutter has stated there probably should be some natural space in the image.

To me this won't rule out the presence of buildings. They should just be secondary. Go to a park and use skyscrapers as the skyline but use the park as the main subject. Just a suggestion. I don't claim to know how to please the voters. Look at my average, just above 5.

I shoot mostly landscape. I find myself using all of my lenses. I have even used my 80-400mm lens on some shots. I don't feel landscape shots have to be shot at wide angle.

All I got to say is I wished that the landscape challenge we were allowed to have a higher pixel rate then the standard 640 X ?. The smaller size doesn't do justice some of the photos. Otherwise 640 is fine by me other then in this case.

Uploaded my shot and it looked like crap at 640 and couldn't unsubmit so I had to post up another one :(

Didn't you look at it at 640 pixels before you uploaded it? I understand completely how you feel...I think 740 is a nice number for my own personal website, but as long as we're all hindered by the same rule set, I see no problem, personally.
