I'm getting one week after next- it comes with 2 lenses.
What I want to know is how good are these lenses and will I be fine with them till I can save some money?
What can I do with the kit lenses?
I eventually want to get a macro lens and a wide angle of some sort.
Also, I need good US websites that sell and price range I'll be looking forward to.
Thanks! |

They are pretty good, AFAIK.
Take photos. :)
With the 2 kit lenses, you have pretty good range. (Equal to 28-300 in 35mm terms)
A 35mm 3.5 macro is coming soon.

How much do the lenses run? I mean I was seeing prices from 4,000 down to 160.
Like I said I won't be buying anything extra for a while- except for a tripod. But I'd like to know what to look for when I do. |

Here's the lenses, available and coming, from the Olympus site. The 50mm Macro is currently available. I think the MSRP is $499 but I think I saw at B & H for $449.Olympus America: Zuiko Digital Lenses
And here are the Olympus Lenses at B&H: Olympus Lenses

I would say that with the exception of a macro lens, you are set to go with the wide range of focal lengths in the kit lenses. To extend that range, you may want to make an investment in the 1.4X teleconverter that Olympus sells. It's very high quality and you will lose only one stop of light. In addition, it can be used on all future lens purchases you make. Olympus lists that you can only use the teleconverter with the kit lenses in manual mode, but this does not seem to be the case from experiences I have been reading on Olympus forum discussions.
Oly is coming out with a 35mm macro lens in the very near future which will cost about $250. It's double for the 50mm. Remember, that with the 4/3rds standard, you have a 2X crop factor so that the 35mm lens becomes a 70mm and the 50mm becomes a 100mm.
I would also consider getting the 25mm extention ring (it's very cheap) which will allow you to focus closer and magnify your subjects even larger.
Have fun! |

My E-500 is supposed to be shipped from Dell in a week or so , but I've had the e-300 for a couple of months now. The kit (14-45) is a good lens as far as kit lenses go. I hate the 58mm threads, however. I found a great coupon on dealmac.com for the e-500 so it was cheaper to get the e-500 kit then the body alone, so I'll now have two of the kit lenses. Thinking about trading both of the kit lenses in towards the 14-54, more for the 67mm filter threads and speed than lack of quality of the kit lenses.
Currently I have the 14-45, 11-22 (just got that Monday), and 50-200. The 50-200 & 11-22 are world class optics that are as good as any of the competition. They have the added advantage in that they are dust & splash proof. The 50-200 is the lens that brought me to the Olympus system having been loyal to Nikon for 20 or so years. Speaking of I still use alot of my classic Nikkors on the olympus via an adapter. I'm thinking about getting the Nikon 45 f2.8P to put on my e-300 as a truly pockatble combination.
I also have the 35mm macro on order. |

hyperfocal, I am assuming dell has the same type of kit best buy does- that's who I'm buying from since I've been given a HUGE gift card. Does it come with a memory card of some sort or did you buy that seperately? I plan on buying a 512 compact flash card when I do order the camera, but just wondering if anything comes in the kit becuase it doesn't really say on the best buy site.
Thanks! |

The kit does not include a memory card that I can see. 512 compact is good to start, but you want to get something with some speed to write faster. Note: The camera takes both Xd and compact flash cards. Xd's write fast!

okay, is there a chart or can someone tell me how man pics in RAW format a 512MB will hold?
I'll have to wait till after Christmas on the more expensive items- at this rate I'm going to need to find a part time job before hubby kills me lol. |

Several online reviews of the E-500 have shown that compact flashs are nearly twice as fast as xD in the E-500. Check out this one. |

The E-500 manual is available on line from Olympus. I actualy down loaded it and went through most of it before my camera even arrived. It has all the specs and file sizes included. And no mine did not come with a memory card. I have one 512MB now and am planning to put a second 512MB in the other slot. |

I downloaded it several days ago. I thought it was strange that the all the cop marks for printing were in the PDF file.
I'm still waiting for my E-500 to get here too. |

oh wow, I will have to look it up then. ANd thanks for the info on the CF cards.
I have to wait till week after next to get the camera now because I'm afraid if I order it now it will come while we are out of town. I'm so excited though. And with all the leaves changing color I'm getting REALLY antsy. Everywhere we go I keep thinking "I wish I had that new camera!" I'm going to take some pics on the colonial parkway tomorrow with my p&s. Put my new learned skills to the test and all the great advice I'm getting here! |
