Last May I went on a journey, but am just now beginning to work on the photos in earnest. Here are a few. I'd love your comments!
We spent most of our time at Hovenweep National Monument:
. . . . . . . . . .
. . . . . . . . . .
I also got a bit closer to get some of the wall detail. The sunset light really made the red sandstone turn funky colors.
. . . . . . . . . .
We also made it to Mesa Verde National Park, quite near Hovenweep and built by the same people: the Anasazi. The light was terrible, though. I'll go again in the Winter when the sunset light can reach into these ruins with spectacular color.
. . . . . . . . . .
Next time I go down, let's all meet there and have a party!

Some amazing shots here, beautiful colors and compositions. My favorite is in the first batch, second down from the top left.
In the last batch, the use of selective areas of desaturation creats a neat effect, too!
Heck of a job man, heck of a job!

Thanks for posting these, otherwise I would not have been blessed enough to see your great landscapes today. I think you might be my photographic hero.

Great shots David. My favorite is the one with the tree shadow on the wall. Don't forget to send me an invitation to the party! |

Ah, that';s lovely stuff. Makes me ache to go back. I wish my Mesa Verde and Monument Valley shots from the 70's had surviced the flood :-(
Nice work!

Coincidentally, I do have a couple of shots from the 80s (1984, I think):
. . . . .
These are from scanned slides, and I didn't like what the scanning did to the colors, so I converted to b/w.

Just go! You're a geologist: surely you can make up some excuse to go see some stunning, red sandstone....

Thanks for the link--great idea!
And thanks to everyone for the comments. It was a fun trip, though we were eaten by ravenous, blood sucking, vampiric gnats. They come out only two weeks each year--and we happened to get there just in time for their predations!

I'll probably be spending a week in December at a drill rig just to the west of the salt flats. If I get a really long zoom lense maybe I can reach. ;-)

Wait a second, the Slip will be in UTAH! I'm not sure if Utah is ready for such a wild man who can stir up mass controversy, spew milk and walk around with chocolate all over his face.

West of the salt flats is Nevada, unless you're in Wendover. Still that is a pretty weird and crazy place for photography! Bring your camera along and plan on doing some hiking in the Silver Island Mountains! And tell me when you're coming so I can meet you for that party!

Our field office is in Wendover. When I'm down I stay at one of the casino's. But it's all work. If I go, I'll be at the drill site about an hour south of Wendover (south of Gold Hill) almost all my waking hours. I will find some time to lose some many at the black jack tables though... just to take advantage of the free beer while I play.
:-)
