I looked through the forums for this idea, and It turns out it's not original.
This discusses the pro's and con's at length.

It seemed timley to revisit this after 6 months, but with two caveats.

1- Let the people vote! Most of us live in democracies of some sort don't we? Lets set up a vote for the members on what they want to see.

2 - Let them eat cake! Allow for personal preferences to be set so that 800x600 images will be risized down to a particular users preference if they are using a small resolution, as Flickr's all sizes page does.

3 - Let the user galleries be included in the risze revolution.

Also discussed in part here and here.

P.S. - This is in part from the fact that I have to squint to see the grain in the challenge on my own and many others photos. I thought we were going for "image grain" not overt grunge grain. Oh well.

Though all this is good, point number 2 could pose problems. Having the server resize the image for the viewer could degrade it therefore changing the playing field.

Also, vertical shots at 800 x 600 would still require scrolling at higher resolutions, even if using F11 to get the maximum viewing space.

I think the point is that most people are using 1280x1024, and don't need to scroll even without f11. Even so, can you not get the main point of a photo across even with just the top and bottom bits taken off?

Like I said, I'd love to see an actual member vote instead of all the back and forth though.

Anyone up for putting this to a vote?

I don't think so in every case. Take my Nude entry - Laundry Day. Of all the feedback in messages and emails I got only a few people saw that I had my shoes on. The ones that did said it helped make the shot and also added greatly to the humor factor. Only a few people in comments noticed it too. This led me to believe that people weren't scrolling down any farther than necessary to see the whole butt, but not the whole shot. EDIT: And it was confirmed via the emails and messages and such. people told me they didn't notice the sneakers because they DIDN'T look.

There is a shot in one of the two open challenges currently being voted on that the title makes reference to elements in the shot. But if you don't scroll down to see the whole shot you will never see them.

To see the whole shot is important since many elements of composition, framing, juxtaposition, intent will be missed only looking at a portion. Take Leading Lines challenge. Looking at those shots, how many would lose their impact if you cut the bottom or top off? A lot.

When you don't see the whole image things can become disconnected and out of place giving the shot an appearance of confusion or incompleteness.

Just becuase you belive that, doesn't make it really the case. I think people are perfetly able to scroll, and I doubt many people are not scrolling. I do. Are voters really that lazy?

I still think a polling system to these issues would be much more beneficial than everyone dropping pundit lines in the forums.

If you're not interested in discussion, starting a thread in the forums is probably not the best way to go about this. The admins are the only ones with the ability to create a poll so maybe you just want to contact them directly.

Didn't I say 'all the emails, feedback, messages'??? It is not what I think, it is what I was told/found out through the messages and emails that people had not even looked. I was TOLD they did not see the sneakers and they did not even look.

Oh, no. That's not what I meant. I think the discussion that went before is quite sufficient is all. I was asking for discussion about the poll directly I guess. Maybe I didn't really mak myself clear about that. Sorry.

Alienyst - Sorry, I misread your comment.

I'm not trying to be a troll here, really, I'm not. For some people take my style of writing like that sometimes I guess. I just think it's an important issue that needs to be reviewed. I've seen many respected people on the site complain about the limitation, just to be shouted down, it seems.

Guess I'll contact langdon or something, but I really thought more people would be interested in this.

I am FOR a larger picture size. I have not entered many challenges lately. One reason is I am always so disappointed once I resize my photos. And even further disappointed when I see it with the browser on the site. They always look much darker online than on computer when editing and a larger pic size would help this.

I look at my pics here and the same pic loaded opn my smugmug site at 800x600 and the larger always looks like a different photo...better.

I would like to see larger as well but can concede that 800x600 might be too large with so many pictures....has anyone thought of 720 x 540? I use that on one site and like it very much.

How about pixel count in photo. 409,600 pixels and does not matter what the dimmentions are. This will let people upload real landscape photos. Or something very tall. This could be fun.

I agree wholeheartedly. You really just can't get the detail out of 640x480.

That is another thing I was thinking but forgot to say. Thanks for posting that. Landscape detail at 640 is almost useless, barely adequate at 640.

I had to go pick up my daugter, but I'll contact admin now to see if they'll let a vote be set up.
