One weird thing I noticed (or it might have been a coincidence) is chewing fruit flavoured gum caused them to land on me. File under weird but true ;-)
Most likely the artifical flavours in the gum including something they could sense and mistake for a meal. |

I was in a butterfly house this past summer at a local preserve and they had scattered about plates filled with a mix of mashed banana, honey and other fruit for them to eat. It's probably a good idea to take something of the sort with you when attempting to photograph butterflies out in the wild. Of course, you may get more than just butterlies :). |

Just remember never touch a butterfly or let them land on you - especially your hands. The oils and stuff in human skin/hair can kill a butterfly. |
