challenges are getting boring, could be one of 2 reasons, 1, i havent won a challenge yet, or 2, i feel posting pictures on the internet for other photographers to see that ive never met seems a bit pointless. hasnt generated any income or fancy photographic results.
keep in mind this is not a rant
look at these photos prior to dpc and competiveness for digital trinkets

just a few, my point is, well to think about it no point other than i think dpc is leeching away at my creative ability because of its strict rules reguarding editing yatta yatta yatta
im sure some of the people who had been taking pictres before they started competing in these challenges can agree with the above statment
Edit: more \/
Its become more apparent lately that my best photos were taken when i wasnt trying to outdo somebody else
think about it, the best photos ever taken, example, that afgani girl that steve McCurry took, and this one from the battle for iwo jima. and bunches of others i would like to post but due to the time it is here and the effectivness of the coffee i had 2 hours ago, im not gonna.
now dont get me wrong, some amazing photos have been taken here at dpc. im just stating im not one of those people who like to work under those kind of circumstances.

Well DPC isn't for everyone, to each their own.

so are you implying that your creativity only spawns from competition with the reward of digital trinkets? stevesdigicams POTD comes to mind. |

I've said it before and I'll say it again.
DON'T SHOOT FOR SOME WEBSITE, SHOOT FOR YOU.
If your not enjoying taking photos then use the site to learn and shoot photo's for yourself. If you shoot something that fits a challenge then enter it if you want.

I have mixed feelings on this. I definitely can see where you are coming from. I feel as though the competitions are very frustrating, but sometimes frustration can push one to excel. Lately, I've find it more helpful to view/vote/comment on other entries then to enter a photo of my own. I feel I learn more that way...a few days into the competition I never even bother to look at my own score. I do think DPC is a wonderful site and I have learned tremendous amounts from tutorials, reading forums, and just browsing through the galleries and portfolios of others.

For me DPC has been a constant mental exercise trying to improve myself and my photographic knowledge and technique. I benefit from other people's work and all the discussions, but one thing I have very clear is that DPC is not the only photographic outlet.
For the time being and my current goals it works fine, but I think you should work on your goals in photography in order to find the correct outlet for your creativity.

goals=take good pictures
oh notonline - ya maybe i should start doing that agian
this whole "being an adult" thing made me take pictures to shoot pictures for other peoples enjoyment, when i didnt really want to, guess it helped squash my passion. when i graduated i went straight into the work thing, worked at a wedding chapel for a little while, hated it, got fired, moved on, did more family portraits and other crap, then by the end of the summer i didnt pick up my camera for 3 weeks straight once. its terrible because you want to take pics but its like when you do what you love for a living it suddently because a job rather than a hobby or outlet. terrible.

hey ..'if it dont hurt then it aint working'
I get frustrated about challenges but i keep coming back to them, I feel this community has helped me to improve my photography but it is not the do all and end all of my feelings towards image capture. I do it to keep my mind balanced and Im usually very happy with what i get out of it. You take some great shots I think so be happy about your ability and try to take the advice given by others from a website contest as simple public opinion.. not everyone will take the same emotion from the same image.
Personally I enjoy taking pictures and if I finish 1st or last so long as I enjoy the picture and at least 1 other person got something from it, then I say it was worth the effort.
take a break for a while loosen the load and shoot for yourself my friend, believe me, life aint that serious, ENJOY IT

My theory is that everything comes in waves. Heck, even waves come in waves. Surfers call them sets. I think creativity and inspiration also come in waves. I don̢۪t know anybody that can stay inspired indefinitely, or be at their peak of creativity 100% of the time either. For me, it comes and goes. And sometimes I feel creative, but either the available challenges don̢۪t inspire me, or I just don̢۪t have the time to devote to photography. There are other times that I̢۪m inspired by a challenge topic, but I just don̢۪t have the creative juice or technical skill to bring off my inspiration. To me, the challenges are just a source of general ideas that may or may not inspire me to get off my butt and go try to create something nice.
I guess the point I̢۪m trying to make is that maybe you̢۪re just trying to ride a wave that hasn̢۪t arrived yet. Kick back in the lineup and sooner or later your wave will roll in.
Is this making any sense?

Yeah Fetor. I hear you on this one. I have always felt that this site was best for helping me by giving me a direction.
Then I entered a challenge... UPDATE BUTTON anyone?
Bottom line is this site is loaded with ideas for those that have few. It also gives you a reason to get disciplined and make some time to do something that you might not have time to do otherwise if you are not someone who usually has time for photography.
It's not a goal in itself though. |

I am one who is also taking a break from the challenges, I have been entering everything willy nilly.
My scores have reflected that and I am going to be selective entering only what really interests me.My imagination is jaded.
I will continue voting and commenting

I tend to agree with Mick here. Don't push it. I figure that DPC is a tool to sharpen your abilities and should be used as such.
There sure is nothing wrong with taking a break from it.
I have found it a great source of inspiration and learned incredible amounts here over the last year.
Good luck whatever your choice is.

Your profile says your 18. I ask when's the last time you jumped in a puddle or played in the rain??? When's the last time you had fnu??? I take very little serious in my life and live for the passions and the moments. The camera sometimes allows me to capture these in a photograph. Might I suggest you go thru the challenges and pick a subject and no matter how long it takes you to shoot it (even if its last years challenge) shoot it but do it for you. I find a lot more creative ways to shoot usually after a challenge has ended and I very rarely look at the challenge results (to get ideas). Have fun at everything you do. Life isn't about making a million dollars and it's not like you can take it with you.
