I'm going to NYC from 19 - 24 October (figures it's when B&H and Adorama are closed). I've visited the city many times before but all were short visits, and I haven't been there since 1997 or so.
I'm looking for any tips whatsoever about the city: Where are the best bagels? Is Canoga Camera a good place? Are there any fun used camera places? Where's a really fun place to take loads of pictures? Other than the really famous stuff (Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, etc.), where are the little-known, wonderful sights?
Thanks! I can't wait to go back there - it's going to be fun to read your ideas. |

NYC must be one of the most photographed cities in the world so it's hard to come up with something that's different. I always think that the people are the most interesting part of NYC and a day spent with a camera in central park will yield lots of interesting stuff. Everything you can imaging (and lots of things you wouldn't imagine) goes on in central park.
Look here for some other ideas of how to photograph NYC.
Don't know about bagels but if you're interested in restaurants, PM me and I'll give you a list.
Have fun.
PS - I didn't realise that they still had flights arriving in NYC when B&H was closed ;)

yes central park is great, prospect park also. Walk across the brooklyn bridge and the brooklyn bromenades is a beautiful walk also great for photographs. Also just walking in lower manhattan you can get alot of great shots. In the soho area (kind of between canal and houston) also, lots of little brick layed streets in their and nice shops. Also nice park between the brooklyn and manhattan bridges on the brooklyn side.

There's H&H Bagels by the Intrepid...very good stuff and then there's Ess-A(Essa?)Bagel on 3rd Ave around 49th Street.
I agree with joezl about the people...photograph them, by all means but make sure the essence of NYC is the backdrop. Basically...that's my entrie MO.

Thanks so much for the ideas and links. Joe, those are some beautiful images! As for the restaurants, I'll PM you later for lunch restaurant ideas. Our dinners are already pre-planned with mandatory attendance :-(
Now I have 3 bagel places to test, which should be sufficient for the 5-day stay.
Gordon, good link. The Insider Travel method (pretend you're a tourist in your own home town) is my way of life, baby.
I'd love to hear even more ideas, and they can be anything, from camera shops to key rings to museums to ... (I like Digital Pins walk suggestions) |

No matter where you go in NYC you can't go wrong.
There are always street performances going on in Washington Square Park.
And SOHO is a nice area with lots of character.
enjoy your trip |
