Haha, I hope your not lighting candles and all too :p
Though I didn't submit for the self-portrait. But I wouldn't expect any 10's if I would have (yes that is me in my profile pic). I'm sure I would have offended some people. 8)

Think yourself lucky - people swear they have seen me on America's most wanted (I'm Australian by the way, so not likely) :)
Two don't want to meet me in a dark alley and another thinks I've escaped from an asylum !!
And they're the positive comments ;)

Mav can chaperone. Don't tell him I said this but he is about 20 years to old for her anyhow. ;o)

I had my picture entered. I unsubmitted it upon the advice of my wife. Judging by you folks, I think I made the right move. I did however use the picture on my profile page. I have been with dpc since august and have never had a picture on my page. My best side is BEHIND the camera and not in front of it.

Good luck with your pics guys. I'll be watching from the sidelines, happily too. - Bob

That's a good shot, Bob, and you have great hair! I'd have given you a 7 or 8, I think Journey would've given you an 8 for sure, with a possible 10 for your phone #. : )

I am trying my best to Comment on every photo as I do the Voting. It is very slow going. If my comments seem a little strange I blame it on the fact that I have not slept in 26 hours, and have had a total of 4 hours sleep in the last 50 hours.

Although the spelling mistakes come naturally all the time. =o)

I have 17 comments now - several of which definitely "get it" in terms of what I was intending with the image.

That's wonderful!

Lots of people obviously don't get it at all and that's fine and to be expected and lots of the people who particularly don't get it and don't like it are not commenting.

But I'm delighted with a few of the comments so far and pleased I did't chicken out and opt for the very boring one I had lined up instead...

:o)

I hate to say this but as I've given out quite a few 2s and 3s already. This is a website where people (should) challenge themselves to take better photos (of themselves in this case). The photos that I rated 1-2-3 are OoF shots that look like they were taken with a webcam for a personals website ... it took me 50 or so times to get mine properly focused (mirrors, lowish light, macro ... digital ... PITA) ... so the penalty is for laziness more then anything else.

But how do you know the lazy people. Well I did take 15 test shots one day then another 88 shots over a three hour period then next day (incliding setup time). Then another hour to edit a couple interesting ones and pick my submition. So about 5 hours, not including the time spent thinking of an idea.

So if you see mine you can bump me up for not being lazy. ;-)

I'm sure if MY WIFE advised me against submitting the picture, MY WIFE might not like it if I gave out my phone number. Although for a 10 on that picture (which might be the only one I get).... Nah, I still don't think MY WIFE would go for it.

I love you idea ... now why am I still howering at 5.34xx?

I devised a new voting scheme especially for the self-portraits. Here it is:

-All women get a 1
-All men get a 5
-Cute men will get an 8 with a comment requesting to PM me their phone number. If they do, and the phone # turns out to be legit, i up them to a 10.

In my comments i throw in the obligatory hogwash about composition, lighting and colors, to make it sound like my appraisal and scoring is strictly according to photographic criteria.

I have to say...I was hugely impressed with the creativity this time around. Everyone surprised me. GOOD JOB on the self portraits!

I've seen some very interesting ideas and rated those higher despite their shortcomings (framing, colors, grain ...) just to reward people for their originality.

Oh, gee Bob, are you MARRIED? Anyway, Journey's the one collecting phone numbers. : )

I'm pretty new at dpc, and my self portrait, currently at just above 5.35 is the best score ive had so far.

Seems like most of the people here have been voting generously so why is no one doing very well?

Also, while comments saying that I have "nice eyes" and such are flattering, I really wish people would give me comments that actually talk about the photo. :(

I have a 5.8 right now with 12 comments. Only one of which suggests possible improvements. The others tell what they like about either me or the photo. lol I'm happy with the results, and with the photo. It will be going on my profile as soon as voting is over.

(hi everyone!)

There definitely were a lot of nice submissions for the self portrait challenge. The ones that I enjoyed the most were the creative ones that didn't give just a literal hi-this-is-me picture. and for the ones that were pretty straightforward, I liked seeing some sort of 'personality' involved that told me a little about them.

Don't blame ME if your score is low. I have hardly scored a single entry below 8. This is my highes scored challenge EVER. What great photos!!! (oh..wait..I'm not done yet..some of you have yet to get my score boost).

Now I know why my score is so low. Not creative enough. :-(

Well, none of the comments on mine accused me of lack of creativity, even the ones who obviously did not care for it at all. However, I can't even break a 5. Maybe too creative? Is there a happy medium? If so, I think it is spelled mediocrity. I have comments that came in almost simultaneously "background detracts" and "good background choice". I'm just trying to consider the source and take the good advice when I see it and leave the rest alone. Ok, back to my cave.

I look forward to matching the submitted pics to everyone who posted here. It'd frustrating hearing people commenting on their pics without a clue to which one it was. hehe

I have read a lot of this thread, and everyone (well a fair ammount of people) seem to be marking images on the way the person looks..

I am new to DPc and this is my first 'challenge entry' but I ahve been voting and commenting on the old composition, technique etc. Regardless of what the person looks like.

This is the right way no?

I have seen some pretty good looking people, who havetaken a pretty awful shot and given them a 1-4, I do so hope they do not think it's on their looks!!!

JP

Ps: love the site, will visit more often!

Me, me, me, and more me. Now, let's talk about something else, what do you think of me?

This thread offers a very interesting and enlightening commentary concerning the perception that folks have of themselves; don't you think?
