I am looking to buy a canon 70-200 f/2.8L USM lens. I am curious if it worth the extra $500 to go with the IS version. If I am using a tripod or freehand faster than 1/60 will it even really make a difference? Thanks.

If you can afford it, go for it. Should make the difference between "to tripod or not to tripod" in a lot of instances.

I asked the same question 2 weeks back and I got positive feedback for the IS version.

Sometimes you don't have the tripod with you. Nuff said.

..and I got the lens today
here's a test shot taken at 135mm indoors at 1/6sec handheld IS on and it isn't blurred :)
I am going to shoot a dance event tonight, let's see how it comes out

Wow, that is amazing. I guess I will have to pay the extra $500 then. Thanks for the advice and great picture.

Absolutely worth it! Not to mention the circular aperture blades that make for a more pleasant Bokeh.

The IS version is also the only one of the 70-200 L lenses that is weather sealed, if that makes any difference.
