I remember a thread from a while back but I cannot find it.
I'm looking for camera bag that can be worn as a back-pack. I've seen some where the camera (with lense attached) can be placed face-down at the top of the bag, making it easy to access.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. |

I absolutely love my LowePro MicroTrekker 200. I always keep my lens attached and it sits right at the top of the bag for easy access. |

I agree. The LowePro Micro Trekker 200 is perfect. Wouldn't change a thing about mine. |

Except you have to take it all the way off to be able to access anything inside of it.....

Sounds like the Tamrac Expedition3 (i carry that one). Its very handy and small enough to be a good walk-around bag.

I use the Tamrac expedition 3 and wish I had bought a slightly larger sling pack.
Seems I could always use just a bit more room, and I pretty much keep it setup to use a sling pack at all times. In fact, I think it's been worn as a backpack exactly once. Didn't really work for me as a backpack. I'm a tall guy and the physics were all wrong. |

I am awaiting delivery of the adorama sling pack. //www.adorama.com/GBSLPBK.html
There was another thread that sort of evolved into back packs:

depending on the size bag you need, check out the kata r-103. i got it this summer and love it. it has a separate zippered flap just to get to the camera easily. it's also quite spacious and comfortable to wear when full. (and i mean really full.. took a trip to uruguay and had it jammed full on the way down)

I use a Tenba PB-15C (or last year's variant of it, anyway).
The Quick Access ports on the side make this an extremely versatile bag -- you don't have to set it down flat and open the "big flap". You can just swing it forward on one shoulder to access your lenses or a flash. It also has a full fold-out waterproof rain cover, as well as a separate smaller "ground cover" that you can pull out when setting it down on (messy) ground. You then stow the ground cover, and you don't have to worry about dirtying your clothes when you put it back on your back... great for when the grass or ground is wet, etc.
When not carrying a laptop, I put my GretagMacbeth Color Checker card in the slot.
It holds all of my regularly used gear... 1DM2, 70-200/2.8L IS, 24-70/2.8L, 16-35/2.8L, (all with hoods), 50/1.4, 550EX with room to spare. |

I like using the day hiking fanny packs. Mountainsmith and The North Face make some great ones that work well for camera use. I keep the camera around my neck, and I can carry 3 lens, filters, memory cards, and 2 bottles of water. All easily accessible by sliding the bag around to the front. They can also be used as a shoulder bag.
Also, if you don't need to bring water with you, lens fit in the water bottle holders as well.

I made my backpack for $20.
I got a backpack on clearance for $11 and made an interior from batting, corroplast, cloth and velcro. An interior can also be made of foam rubber like in seat cushions, just cut out the holes for your needs.
Large, cheap, same materials as the true photo backpacks BUT since it is a 'Dr Grind' brand, and i have kid seats in my car, no one thinks of it as holding photo gear, just probably kids school books! And the skateboard carrier holds a tripod very nicely! |

I'm still on the hunt to replace my sling bag. Nothing compares yet, but here's one that looks interesting:

My Adorama sling bag was just delivered. It is nice and roomy. I wish the top opened on the outside rather than the inside but I can live with it. It is roughly the same length and width as my LowPro Orion but almost 50% deeper. I will report further after I actually use it.

I tried a backpack and hated it. I much prefer a good shoulder bag paired with a waistbelt. I use the LowePro Stealth Reporter 200AW and the Deluxe Waistbelt. whan hiking or moving around a lot, I just keep the waistbel fastened and the weight is held secure, close to my COG and it's out of the way. When I need accessto the contents, I just release the blet buckle and use the shoulder strap.

I'm particularly curious about the strap--it's never shown in their ads! If you can post a pic of it--or better yet--a pic of how it looks being worn so I can see how comfortable the strap looks!

I think all back pack type camera bags allow you to carry the camera with lenses attached in the top part of the bag . I have the Canon back pack bag. It has a space for 5-6 lenses, a camera w/lens attached and 2 spare bodies if you have them. Nice bag really for the money. Well padded also and comfortable to wear. Has straps for tripod on bottom and straps for a monopod on the side.

Please don't judge the quality of these images but here are a few snaps:
