This week's New Yorker magazine has an interesting article on how photographs were manipulated in the 1860s, Seeing Things.

It's a good read for anyone interested in how photography was sometimes (mis)used in the early days.

Hi Alice - thanks for the link! I especially enjoyed reading about Margery, famous for being able to materialize a hand from her belly. Isn't it funny that people refused to believe that the photos were fakes even after the photographer admitted to some fancy editing?

With all those ghost images running around in the background of portraits, I suppose this is a timely article for Halloween as well as exploring trick photography of the 1860s.
