Kind of upset, I really thought I might do good on this one. Alas, a bad score as usual....

Slowly rising. Just hoping to break 5.5 here. C'mon people :)

I have to say I am extremely disappointed. I'm getting comments like "If this were in a different challenge, I'd give it the 10 it deserves." It is of something that makes me feel good about myself and my life. It's not odd or unusual either. But I guess not having someone jumping up in the air (some of those are great) or at a wedding, it is scoring low. I just wish people would read the description and not just the title.

5.7917 and still falling. I thought this should score higher than my personal best. (sniff sniff) Ok, I'm going to pull myself up by the bootstraps and head out the door.

47 votes and no comments....(sigh)...

I grow a little perplexed at that Jutilda's mention on a desire that people would read the description. As far as I can see, the ONLY things a voter sees when looking at an image is 1) The title 2)The image itself. I don't see any description on the images while in the voting stage. Personally, I think this is a good thing because a person is not letting the description of "who, what, why, how, where" impact on thier voting. A voter is voting primarily on the integrity of the image itself and nothing else - no description, no knowledge of who's work it is to sway or influence the vote.

Slaps head. Doh!!!!O.K. I am slow to understand due to lack of good sleep....now I understand what you mean by description - description of the challenge not the entry itself. Pardon my lapse of understanding. Never mind me, go back to what you were doing - this never happened:-)

After my 3.xxx score in complementary colors, I am hoping this does better :)

C Novack - yep you got it. LOL I think that I wasn't clear, but you know what I meant. I thought originally that it was to just get a photo OF a celebration too, until I read the in depth description of the challenge. I think some of the newer people are still getting the hang of it.

Yup on this one the tough love voters waited until today ;). I also was 6's last night after about 25 votes but alas today it's bounced all over from 5.4 to 5.6. I think this challenge will be one of the lower scoring challenges in a while. Heads up, eyes straight, chin out .... and turn the other cheek ..... NO Pull up your pants...not that cheek!!!

I have been trying to refrain from posting because for the moment I am at my highest score ever! I don't want to post more score in fear I might send it crashing (as it has in every other challenge I have entered hehe). I am so excited though, so I really just had to type SOMETHING! hehe

exactly Phantom, it's not the end of the world. everybody thinks in a different way of a celebration.

10/10/2005 05:17:45 PM · #42
I didn't enter but I have voted and commented. I love it when there are under 200 submissions.....gives me time to vote and comment.

Stats: You have rated 137 of 137 images (100%) in this challenge.

I do believe she means the challenge description

Details: In a world of famine, poverty, war, and natural disasters it can sometimes be hard to stay upbeat. This week, let's all find cause to celebrate. Devote your photographic energies to making us feel good about ourselves and our lives.

Ooops! Guess I should have read on before coming to Jutilda's rescue! DUH.....ok, next!

I'm happy. Mostly I just want to bump some of my older photos down in my profile. :)

I did not enter this contest as I did not have time to organise something that would actually meet the challenge, I work long hours :-(

I'm amazed at how many entries do not meet the challenge, about one third by my ranking. For example a photo of the outside of a church does not meet "making us feel good about ourselves and our lives" to me. A photo of the inside set up for a celebration or containing people celebrating ideal. Churches themselves are not reason to celebrate in my mind, many of the events held there are not celebratory. The same applies to photos of bored or scared looking wildlife (an excited animal would be different), cemetaries, outside toilets, raw meat, airplanes and autumn leaves, no matter what title they are given.

I'm probably going to get flamed for this but I feel relevance is the most important thing in a challenge. A great photo that is not at all relevant to the challenge will always recieve a low score from me, otherwise why have themes at all?
10/10/2005 06:11:59 PM · #47
I thought this challenge left it wide open to do anything. So I didn't worry about the "Celebration" aspect because everyone has something different that makes them feel good. So I judged the photos on how well I liked them, with no preconceptions.

In fact I took a piece of black construction paper & folded it so that it just covered the titles. I might do that more often. It lets the images do all the talking without any explainations.

I also thought this challenge was left wide open too. I think anything would fit this challenge as long as it reflects something that makes them feel good. I am voting on the merit of each photograph and there is hardly any in my opinion that do not meet the challenge. Whose to say what makes one feel good, other than the person behind the lens.

I went to sleep at 5.3750, woke up to 5.9 and have watched it creep upward. I like scores over 6. I also like comments. I'll enjoy it (while it lasts.)
