...just curious, is a centered composition totally taboo regardless of the subject? Rec'd comments both ways on this one - for and against.

I did mess around with placement some, but this appealed to me the most. FWIW, I'm pleased with the outcome...this isn't a gripe or complaint, just thought this "rule" would be fun to talk about. And yes, I know it's a flower shot. ;^)

I think the centered composition does work though maybe not in its present orientation. Using the shape and direction of the petals to your advantage I think rotated slightly less that 180 degrees would work very well. This would put the leading petal (currently in the bottom right) on the diagonal pointing to the upper right.

The centered composition of this shot didn't bother me, but the effect didn't seem to quite work (IMHO). I don't think it had anything to do with the placement of the subject. Had the rose been focused and centered with a stem decending from it and leaves in the background with a nice bokeh, I think it probably would have scored much higher.

In answer to your question - from my personal point of view - I think a centered composition can work in certain situations quite well, it just doesn't work well in most.

IMO this shot works with the centered subject. The light and blur create the look of things spiraling away from the infocus and lit part of the rose. I think it just suffered from being a little dark for a greetng card. Otherwise nice job.

i think centered compositions work well this time. because the subject of this photo is kind of smeared out of center, i think this is pretty good.

i think the greeting card concept also lends itself to a centered composition.

Wow - That was some quick feedback! Thanks all.

Being a basic challenge I tried something different with a radial zoom Cokin filter and a little gaussian blur to try and get the rose to pop out (like a 3D effect).

Good to know a centered composition is ok on a limited usage once in awhile. Has anybody else tried centering intentionally? Did it work?

I do centered images all the time, and they usually get commented down, and it pisses me off. Centering is a perfectly valid compositional technique, especially where you want to suggest serenity, complacency, stability, or permanence, the unchanging nature of a thing.

I use a LOT of centered horizons in landscapes, balancing the yin and yang of sky & land or sky & sea.

Robt.

There was actually a challenge topic of 'Centered Composition'.

Ehm... it was an advanced editing challenge, still, nice job. I like the centered composition, but IMO it just doesn't pop out enough. Maybe if you had done some advanced editing... ;-)

ROFLMAO!!! You're right, and I did do some advanced editing (look at the photo notes)...guess not enough post-processing eh? ;^)

Maybe there will be a 'Centered Composition II' and I can try it again! He-he.

The centering of the subject is fine... It is the (amount of) soft edge of the lower petal that is a distraction for me.
