more importantly ... do you have an external flash? you're going to need one.

the long lens you listed will most likely will not be needed

They are both slow consumer zooms, but the 18-55 will be more useful assuming you aren't stuck at the back of the room. Do yourself a favor and buy a $70 EF 50 F1.8, or rent a 24-70 F2.8L.

Use one that can bounce, a 420EX works fine.

This will be your favorite lens once you get it, for $70, it's an incredible little lens, and every Canon user here will attest to that.

as well as a flash--an external battery pack is a great idea as well. A Good flash will cost you, i'm saving for one now.

i can't say i would go for the external battery pack. Two good sets of batteries will last a LONG time. If you broght your charger along you could charge while you are shooting. I have never run out of flash power.

I'm a Nikon D70 user and I have the 50mm 1.8 also....it is my FAVORITE lens. I just bought a new one today though, so we'll see which wins out!

I just shot a cousin's wedding a few weeks ago (not as the pro) and I used my 50mm. I found at times (more than I liked) the 50mm was too tele for a wedding scene (which is why I got the 28-75mm)...

I am a Canon user. I testify that I love the Canon 50mm F/1.8 Lense.

I also picked up the Sigma 500 Super DG+ Flash, it rocks something fierce.

The OP has a 300D, and there are a few things that the 580EX can do that the 420EX can't, unless you install one of the hacks. One of the Sigma flashes can do them also, and costs less.

True, very true.

That would be the Sigma Flash that I picked up.

Get 4 Gig of memory cards and shoot everything in RAW (figure on 300-500 pics). Lighting in churches suck. it is mixed (daylight, stained glass, candle, incandescent and sometimes other lights too). and dark. RAW will allow you to adjust WB and exposure better than JPG BY FAR.

Feel free to run ISO settings up to 800. Watch shutter speeds - you don't want camera shake.

Flash use: a science and art! The art part is making it look like there was no flash. the science, well, distance and darkness will control how much energy the flash puts out. it then needs to recycle (recharge) before it can fire again, or you will get (very) underexposed images. So get close when you fire it. Using a light modifier (lightsphere, omnibounce, etc) will help a lot with the art part, making it look much more natural, but at the expense of some light, so get teh 580 or sigma 500 (or metz 54).

Then you need to know, without much thinking, about the different modes - P mode will assume the flash is hte primary light source, so the BG may go dark. T and A use the flash as fill, so they meter based on ambient light..in A mode the camera chooses a shutter speed..can be as long as 30 seconds. watch for camera shake speeds! In T mode if you set if for 1/focal length (using your 18-55 1/60 should be good) and the ap will be the widest most of the time, and may flash in the viewfinder telling you it cannot properly expsose the shot.

FEC (flash exposure compensation) can be had in the rebel with one of the firmware hacks and unless you run the flash unit in it's auto mode, you should (read MUST) have FEC to get decently exposed shots, consistently.

As for composing shots - get close, tight.

Good luck. I did a wedding for some friends once. It can get a little crazy. I would recommend bringing the long lens for doing some portait shots after or before the ceremony. You want to make sure you get far enough back from your subject and zoom in so you don't distort the face.
