In reading ibkc's recent threads (one, two) I feel compelled to write about my recent 20D buying experience (and why I was so excited to finally get mine).

I've shopped quite a bit on Ebay and generally had really good experiences. The first 20D I bought was from a guy who had a 99.99% positive rating since 1999. Hundreds of positive comments. He'd sold lots of other cameras, etc. I did all the right research, looked at who he sold to and what he sold and he seemed squeaky clean. The day I bought my camera everything seemed fine, he even emailed me right away saying he'd send me the tracking number. The next day he was gone. Closed down his ebay shop and his voice mailbox on his 800 number was full a few days after he dissapeared.

He had paypal buyer protection and they have credited back $1000 to me already. They say they are working to get the rest back but there's no guaruntee.

The reason I write this is to simply say be very careful if you buy anything over $1000. And always make sure that your seller has the $1000 paypal buyer protection logo.

Oh and the second time I bought the 20D and my good lenses I went through Beachcamera and B&H Photo. Great experience with both. Also I'll still buy stuff off Ebay, but only if it's 100% covered by paypal buyer protection. $999 is my new limit, heh.

a very similar thing happen to me.... although i told some really big white lies to get my money back.... i told him my dad was a cop... found out some really interesting stuff about him and got his phone numbers , off google, ( which he fell for that i found out through police records ) and after 3 weeks finally got my $1400.00 off him with a bank cheque....lol... he must've pooped himself this time... anyways i finally got my 20D through Harvery Norman, ( a major store in australia ) and payed it off interest free.... last payment was last month .. YIPPEEEE.... and my dad ?... he's a retired coal miner... kekekekekkeke..... i really shoulda been a police detective in a previous life.....

He's gone from ebay now, they disabled his account and ended all of his open auctions.

Just curious guys, were the sellers in the two scams local or overseas vendors? Didn't know paypal had a $ limit you can claim back from them will keep that in mind, very good to know.

Buy the way if you paid paypal by credit card you may have another avenue - I believe visa, mastercard etc also have a fraud protection policy. Not sure if there is a $ limit though, or if maybe this is the system that paypal use...

Hope it all ends well for you.

Mine was in the US. And I was so excited to get my camera that I forgot to double check Paypal which has multiple accounts. I've been trying to keep my credit card balance at zero so have been using my checking account for smaller purchases. Well I forgot to switch when I bought the camera. doh

Last time I'll make that mistake.
