Anyone know...if you are color blind (only see certain colors and some colors appear different in shades), can you become a police officer?
09/28/2005 11:09:17 AM · #2
Usually not. I suppose it depends on the level or degree of the color blindness in question.

According to my husband (a cop), you are tested for color-blindness during your physical. Passing the test would depend on the degree of color blindness they find in the test.

Hope that helps!

that sucks.

It's not uncommon in men. I've read 1 in 100 to 1 in 12 - depends on who you believe and the degree of color blindness.

What's Color Blindness?

i guess the biggest problem would be identifying a perp or a car.

My son's friend is color blind. There are times when he can't identify something because the tones are exactly the same. For example, if you have a particular shade/hue of red against a particular shade/tone of gray, unless there is shadow, a texture difference, or movement, he won't see it - they look to him to be the same hue/tone. Hope that made sense... Kind of like what happens with selective desat I would guess.

yeh i know what being color blind is, my bf is color blind. reds look orange and greens look grey to him. he said he cant distinguish shades but he wants to be cop really bad and they dont determine the level of color blindness until right before they let you go into the academy. it would suck to do all of that for 3 months and then not make it because your color blind.

i'm red-green colourblind (so you'll have to forgive any photo i post where i've made someone's skin tone bright green). the severity of colour-blindness does indeed vary greatly. from my recollection, most police forces don't require perfect colour vision (any more than they require 20:20 vision), but i think that it does have some impact. heck, even in aviation, colour-blind pilots can fly -- and airport lights and signals use all variety of colours -- they just have certain restrictions (no flying at night, for ex).

queanbeez, your boyfriend could google 'ishihara' and download those dotted test plates they use to assess colour-blindness to see how bad he really is before going through all that work...if it's mild, he should be okay.

I know for a fact that color blindness will keep keep you out of the RCMP in Canada, but I know quite a few guys who were Park Wardens with me who were color blind. I think it's the same for Fisheries Officers.

If he really wants it, he should give it a shot. He may do fine on the test. Its not a yes or no its a 'depends on how much it will effect your work.' If he doesn't try, he may regret it later. Maybe he can find an eye doctor that has cop patients and knows about this sort of thing. Or find out who gives the physical.

a lot of other jobs require you to NOT be color blind as well. I was an Aviation Electrician in the Navy and we could not be color blind due to wires and diagrams and resistors and such.

cant be a bomb squad guy either if you are color blind....dont cut the red wire, um they all look red to me :O

That is probably why he didn't tell you.

I understand that dogs are colorblind. Could maybe work in a K-9 unit.

;)

Hence this entry from the first go-round of this challenge ... : )

If your monitor is not superbly calibrated, I don't think a download of those plates will be an accurate assessment. It's my understanding that about 10% of males suffer from some form of color defect, and about 1/1000 females -- interestingly, my aunt was color-blind.

i gave him the "ishihara" test and he got 3/6 correct and for the last one he said 2.
