I like the overall look a lot, but I wonder if the lighting scheme shouldn't be reversed: The king in the hazy halo of light and the rook fading into the blackness. Seems more "logical" to me... |

I don't know, don't like it much myself. The don't know part is why?
Too soft? The balance of light, to light on the left, too dark on the right? The DOF, is the king out of focus, or is it the smoke? Does it disturb: yes. Is it the position of the objects? Could be.
I wonder how this looks when the order is the other way round. King to tower instead of tower to King. The thing that jumps out at this moment is the horse, that does not correlate to the title. I also don't like the balance between the dark and the light parts of the queen and king know I look a bit more often. The first three have a better balance. The tower is too bright in relation to the King. I wonder what the effect of a small fan would be, to give the smoke a look as if it is blown over the objects. The smoke over the tower and horse looks ok, but with the other ones it doesn't. Looked again. The angle of the horse does not correlate to the angle of the king. I don't have a clue if that would make it better, it is just an observation.
To sum up: Too much light on the left. The light on the queen and kings base disturbes. The pattern of the smoke on the right side of the image. The cross on top of the King looks out of focus (the subject makes that the object too look at).
But this is just my opinion at 1 o clock on sunday morning.

The knight is reflecting too much light off the body. Rotate the knight. It has too much light in relation to the others. symmetry.

I think this is shot very well technically, John. But, to me at least, it has no warmth, no soul. It looks like aphotographic exercise.

I'm not quite sure what you're trying to achieve here but that haze isnt' adding to your image at all. It's making things low contrast and it's not very appealing.
Were you spraying water on them? Not sure what you used to get that effect. It might not look so low contrast if it was coming from the opposite side of the light. Did you try that? |
