Just going out and about trying out my new camera, when it stopped in the middle of a burst and displayed ''Err' '99'' on the top LCD. I was using my Sigma 12-24, so thought that this might have been the problem, so took off the lens and replaced it. No joy. When I turn on the camera, the shutter mechanism makes a small 'clunk' and the top LCD displays ''Err' '99'' even with no lens at all mounted on the camera. I can't even get into the menu system. I know it wasn't the lens that caused this, as the problem seems to be a jammed shutter or suchlike, but I can't help worrying about it.

I've removed and reinserted the battery and the clock battery also to no avail. Does anyone here have any insights ?

I've 'phoned the camera shop where I bought it and they're trying to get a replacement in from one of their other branches, but I've got to wait and I don't really like that.

After removing the battery nothing? That's strange, because that should help.

Sometimes I have the same problem with my Canon Speedlite 420EX, with very short shutterspeeds the shutter stucks somehow and I have to get the battery out & in to let the camera work again.

'Err' '99' is the Canon catch all error. It's usually related to communication between the camera and the lens.

I got this error when my battery was completely depleted.

I have only had that occur once and removing the battery worked for me.

it could be the lens.

I have problems with my sigma 105 mm lens. It doesn't work on the 10D. Or well sometimes after switching the camera on and off a few times it all of a sudden works and i can take 2 pictures, then all of a sudden it gives an 'err' '99'. I have to set the aperature to wide open.. and then SOMETIMES it works... and i fidle with the camera, 'err' '99'.

It is a problem with the chip in the sigma lens i think.

however if the lens has worked for a long time before, then i guess it could be the camera.

It happened to me once when I took out the flash card while camera was ON. I switched it off, closed my eyes, prayed to God and switched it back on. It worked :)

Thanks everyone for your responses, but the problem persists even after removing and replacing the battery and even with no lens mounted on the camera.

Try a different lens maybe?

i reofrmat the card and then it works (however this does delete all your pics)(learned the hard way) this can be done by going into the menu and selcting format. Hope this helps!!

Thanks again, but I cannot even get into the menu system. With or without a lens mounted.
