Today was the first day of the Murray's Mill Harvest Folk Festival at the historic Murray's Mill in Catawba, North Carolina. As usual, I took my camera because this place is full of interesting people doing interesting things.
I spotted this man and his look just captivated me for obvious reasons. He was wearing the large black cowboy hat and a shirt with 'security officer' patches on the sleeves. He was sitting in the shade at a picnic table watching a civil war battle re-enactment. I introduced myself and asked him if I could make a photo of him.
"I'll break your camera."
I assured him that he wouldn't as he granted me the permission to make a photo.
"Did it break?"
I showed him the image in the LCD of my camera.
"That's one good-lookin' old bugger huh? I'm almost 84 years old. My birthday is in February."
I asked him for his name.
"I'm Paul Travis of Catfish, North Carolina. I was in the Army in Europe during World War II. It was cold. I still shiver from it sometimes."
Catfish, North Carolina is a nickname for a community not far from here called Claremont.
I thanked him for the photo opportunity and let him get back to what he was doing...

Doesn't look a bit like me -- nice work : )
Thanks for including the background -- interesting in itself, and useful for those hesitant to photograph "interesting people" they don't know. |

Great little story, John and a very good capture of his face.
Of course, it would have been a little funnier if it went like this...

He then proceeded to grab the 20D from my hands, throw it to the ground and smash it into oblivion with the butt of his rifle!
"I done told ya I would break it!" He said. |

Wonderful photo! I bet this guy could talk your ear off with some interesting stories if you let him (and you had the time to listen).
Thanks for sharing this...

It's in all the cowboy/country type songs Neil. The cowboy had... a dog ... had a girlfriend... had a pickup truck...

I have never been much on this sort of manipulation, but I sorta like this one. It came from the original photo in this thread. I guess it's pretty sad that I manipulate something this way and it still comes out black and white...
