I have a few comments that aren't contructive at all, like "gross" is one of them. I am always posting comments and I never vote under a bag so why is that an option and what good does it do when those people make crap remarks?
09/23/2005 11:13:04 PM · #2
Don't judge everone who chooses to remain anonymous during voting by the coarse remarks of a few. The main reason why some choose to remain anonymous until voting is over is to avoid being PM'd by photogs during the voting period. The names are revealed at the end of voting, so anonymity is temporary anyway.
If there are any comments that you feel violate the site terms of service, such as personal attacks, please report those to one or moe site council members. You can find us listed near the top of the photographer profiles, just below the two admins. You can also figure out which of are online with the community>who's online page.

If you find a comment to be offensive, from a bag head or an other commenter, contact SC.

Bagheads who leave weird comments are best just ignored. Some feel that the Bag gives them the chance to make comments while voting is going on and then the photographer will forget that the comment is weird.

Rightfully so, some commenters are excellent and can give good constructive critiques while voting goes on BUT have gotten some nasty feed back even though the comment is spot on. They feel that while voting is going on that being a Baghead is easier.

Its an option precisely for that reason - the commenter does not wish to be contacted about the comment they made during the voting phase.

If the comment is inappropriate (against site policy), you can ask the SC to remove it. If its just that you dont agree with the commenter - you can PM them after the challenge is over.

I do it because sometimes when a constructive comment is made I prefer not to get a PM. Reason why I don't comment as much anymore.

If there was no PM (private message) feature I would gladly not use a bag.

That must be some record of quick responses :)

My theory is that these people were terribly deformed in circus accidents as children and they don't want anyone to see their hideous visage.

...or maybe they just don't want to risk getting unwanted pm's during voting?

I've wondered the same thing - I think that discussion is the spice of it all. I enjoy hearing more about their perspective during the voting - it helps me be a more compasionate voter I think -

Plus when it comes down to the wire I can PM the "unbagged" and beg for higher scores to push me over a 7! :-) (totally kidding here folks)

My opinion is that the photo should speak for itself. In the past, I have left comments that the photographer does not agree with and they believe that I may have voted their entry low. They may be tempted to PM me, lobbying for a higher vote. This is highly annoying and suggests that they believe they know more about my opinion than I do, which is nonsense.

You might not, but some would.

Some do.. I vote 'under the bag'. My comments, as rare as they are these days, are my opinion and impression of the image. Rebuttals by the photographer are of no use. After the challenge is over and there is no possible gain by a rebuttal, they usually don't come at all.

When I have commented recently, I've invariably regretted it.
I do my best to give CONSTRUCTIVE feedback, but I get a lot of angry PMs in response... usually when I question relevance to the challenge. If I leave lots of comments again, I will definitely be a bag head.

Same for me. In response to comments I have made, I will get argumentative PMs from people who take them the wrong way or too personally. Being hidden prevents knee-jerk reactions and I haven't had an issue since I started hiding my mug.

Slippy is one of the worst offenders... :-)

I've only ever gotten one PM regarding a comment made during voting. But I just feel more free to give honest critique when badheaded. It's not a big deal, I don't think I'm ever rude about my opinions, with or without the bag. I just prefer doing it that way. On some photos it would either mean a baghead comment, or no comment at all.

I want to image to speak for itself. A reply to a comment usually gives me more info. At one point I decided that if I got a PM during voting the vote would never change. Since I like to review all my votes when I'm done and do change a number of them I don't want the PM to influence me. Thus I have gone for the bag.

As for comments I usually comment when I want to let someone know what I like about an image or when I see something that to me could be improved. I usually comment on those that I give a middle score to but I have given ideas for improvement to even those I give a high score to - I figure it is worth it to someone to know what could have turned a 9 into a 10 as much as it is to know what could turn a 5 into a 6. So just because I gave a criticism in my comments does not mean I gave a low score.

I think "gross" is a constructive comment. It tells you that viewer was bothered by your image. Mabye that's what you wanted, maybe not, but at least you know how someone reacted.

I don't have to respect anyone but if they earn my respect then I give it freely. Constructive, useful comments are welcome and considered always.

Ba dum bum.

Out of curiosity, if you are so concerned about lack of anonymity why don't you post your own picture in your profile - rather than a cartoon? Isn't that the same thing you are condemning?
