i love asheville, being from there (hehehe), but im not sure about asheville in march. heck any of the mountain options really--im remembering cold and lotsa of rain. bleh.
charleston is awesome, i go almost every year--but with the race--could be way hectic. someone mentioned wilmington--come on down! just kidding, i actually want to drive somewhere different! so that brings us back to savannah. oh, im going to the virginia highlands/little five point area of atlanta in august so i can scope out that scene for us too. thats going to be killer for photos, im sure! ;)
so anyhoo, as it stands, im posting my official vote (along with john and jimmyn4) for savannah. |

OK before I go looking into more prices WHERE for that weekend?
Just had to add the Carolinas go into full high priced rates in mid March...highest of the year...that's what I found out when checking out Charleston tourist season for the Carolinas is Mid March to Mid May then rates drop again.

I wouldn't worry too much about posting pricing... I dunno if everyone is gonna want to try to stay at the same place or not. Some people may wanna stay at the 5-star level and some may wanna find something outside of town no matter which destination we choose...

I think April 17 for Savannah works for me too. I will plan to travel to Savannah on April 16 and arrive by 1 or 2pm. If anyone else wants to come in early, let me know and maybe we can get together friday night for dinner or something....

If anyone is considering visiting East TN in the fall and if you like mountain crafts and music, you should check out the Appalachian Museum's fall homecoming in October. It's in Norris, TN which is just up the road from Knoxville. It last several days and has lots of stuff to see and do. It's my favorite festival of the year.

Hey indi -- If Bernard, Travis and I try to make Savannah in the Spring, and you can make it, you could drive to Canton, and ride with us if you wanted.

Savannah works for me. Charleston would be my second choice.

We can make it to any of those places. We live in Alabama. We go to Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg often. My son Lives over the mountain near Cullowhee, NC. We were just there a couple of weeks ago for my granddaughter's high school graduation. Since we are old retirees we can get to most any place in the Southeast with just enough planning time so that we can be sure that we are scheduled for docent tours at the art museum where we volunter.
We Like Ashville, also Charleston and Savannah would be great in the Spring.

I cannot guarantee anything for spring 2004 but I would like to travel to savannah. I have beeb there several years ago and it's a town with 'atmosphere' like we say iin french.
Count me potentially in it, I would flight from DC as I guess the drive would lbe like 10h, but still possible by car.

Our closest friends live in Whittier,(our friend Heather has lived there her entire life!), and own businesses in Cherokee and Sylva. We visit there several times a year.

GeeGee -- Small world. I live in Canton, but grew up about a mile from Haywood Medical Center. Cool. One of my best friends teaches at Smokey Mountain.

GeeGee - I just love Waynesville! I usually try to shop there (there is a very cool little gallery there that I love), but (thankfully!) have never had to use the medical facilities when visiting.
My husband and I actually "ran away" and got married at the Balsam Mountain Inn, near Waynesville, in 1999, with our friends from Whittier to stand up for us.
Are you familiar with the Blackrock Outdoor Company in Cherokee and Sylva?
karmat - I must drive right by you every time I go to Cherokee!

Whatever happened to the really neat places like Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg in April? |

Looking through this thread, it appears that the majority of those speaking up about it liked Savannah... |

Now you're talking....I used to live there and have been looking for an excuse to go back to the city. If anyone is interested in New Orleans I can honestly say Metairie and Kenner are quiter and less expensive than the Quarter, but if you want to stay right were all the action is then you stay in the Quarter.
It doesn't matter where you stay or what you do in New Orleans as long as you make time for a drive across the causeway at sunset it is so beautiful even if it does take about an hour and a half it is well worth the time, and if you like old fashion styled amusement parks then City Park is the other must, they are the two things that lifetime residents of the city will take friends and family to and also a way to avoid the tourist traps. City Park is well known by romance novel readers it was once known as "Twin Oakes Plantation" and the Park Drive is lined with oak trees.
Shopping the Quarter has all the quaint little tourist style shops, the Riverwalk Mall is right off the Quarter, Jax Brewery is a cool renovated brewery turned into a mall which includes New Orleans School of Cooking which offers one day cooking courses. Then the Lakeside Mall is in Metairie is somewhat older as far as malls go and in Kenner there is the Esplande Mall which is very modern and fairly large. Kenner also has some really quaint shops featuring a Space Museum, a Saints Hall of fame, one of many Mardi Gras Museums and a really neat toy train museum....oops I'm getting on a roll about one very beautiful city.

I have never been to Savannah and that's one of the reasons it interests me more than the rest. It's too early to plan an event schedule, but I will start looking at what there is to do in Savannah. There are a lot of walking tours and plenty to see historically...
