If anyone is totally against Dollywood/Pigeon Forge, Tennesse, sound off now :)

My only sound off is just keep it in the planning stages of Spring 2004...Dollywood/Pigeon Forge is expensive, and I want to come! But to bring the family I can't just say ok I'm hopping in the car and driving to Dollywood.

Don't forget that Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge are at the foot of the Smokey Mountains National Park, the most visited National Park in the Nation. Some pretty incredible photo ops there. Pigeon Forge and Gatllinburg are basically right next to each other. Things are a bit more expensive, touristy and crowded in Gatlinburg but there are some incredible mountain cottages and condos there that are worth the price.

If anyone wanted to make a day trip or pass through Nashville, which is great to visit, it is only about 3 hrs from there.

eeek, im gonna get in trouble for saying this--but ive never had any desire to go to dollywood, and i wasnt a huge fan of gatlinburg last time i was there! *cringes*

that having been said--if we are going to do mountain setting, how come not asheville? :)

THAT having been said--im jumping up and down for charleston or savannah--these are awesome, awesome, awesome places guys!

bottom line tho, i'll be happy no matter what--just getting together is going to be the fun part. so you guys decide and i'll be cool with whatever!

I also prefer the historic value of charleston and savannah. I guess this is gonna be one of those issues that, since there is more than one person involved, there won't be an easy solution :)

Maybe the group should nominate a single person from those who have posted here so far to just choose a place and let's go with it :)

Why not research the 3 top choices and list some attractions and prices...might help to make the decision for some...

If you go with Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge (they are really just "one"), there are some less expensive places to stay that aren't that far out. For example, you could stay in the Canton/Waynesville area adn it is only about a 45 minute Interstate drive. Or you could stay in the Dandridge TN area adn it is only about a 20 minute drive. etc. etc.
Photo ops in G/PF may not be that great, but Cades Cove is nearby as are a couple of Parkways. And who can forget Cherokee, NC (though I try on a daily basis :-/)?

Also, I don't think lodging, etc. is as expensive as Charleston. don't know about Savannah.

Asheville is an awesome choice, Alecia!!!

just chiming in that i'd rather go to some place more scenic than dollywood, altho that would still be fun.

Ok I will volunteer to do a little research on locations and costs if we can come up with 2 or 3 choices
06/10/2003 04:57:20 PM · #36
I think the 4 choices are Asheville, Pigeon Forge, Charleston, and Savannah...
06/10/2003 04:58:30 PM · #37
I'm not really concerned with lodging cost at this point... I plan to make a short vacation out of it and I would expect to spend between $75 and $125 per night for lodging... Downtown charleston and savannah would be a little more...

Give me a few days and I will see what I can come up with...Hey how did I miss Charleston before? Geesh close enough to drive from Columbia I could make it a business trip...lol

If I was choosing for photo ops... I would choose Savannah.

I'm in for Savannah or Charleston, I'll cross my fingers that it won't be a weekend when I have to do my reserve time.

Jimmy, do u know what weekend that will be? We haven't even discussed dates yet, but if you know when u will be gone, I'm certain we can work around it...

John, I know the 11-14 of July is out but I don't know about August yet. If there is a GTG in DC for the 5th of July I'll probably head up there for that. So maybe some of the later weekends in July might work? Thanks for the consideration.

Hey I was going to start looking tonight at prices and attractions for Charleston and Savannah and hope to post tomorrow morning what I found out for them, but I was planning to look for March and April of 2004 as suggested in the beginning of the thread did that change somewhere and I missed it?

Also Jimmy is your reserves always the second weekend of the month?

=o) Anyone like Bed and Breakfast Inns? Anyone have a preferrence to motel/hotel chains? I'm a Hampton/Hilton lover, but if anyone has a preferrence to chains let me know and I will see what I can find for prices for that period of time.

Hey sorry for the misunderstanding. I was thinking it was happening this summer. I just got out of the active duty and joined the reserves so I don't honestly know how they schedule their drills. Anyways, maybe I can find out if they have drills scheduled that far out. Sorry for the confusion.
