I've been wondering if there is a certain way that is better to convert my color photos to black and white in photoshop and when I should edit the pictures. First, does it make a difference if I change it to black and white through the mode menu, click desaturate, lower the saturation bar all the way down in the hue/saturation menu, or colorize. Is there a diffence in the quality of the image or in file sizes between these methods? Second, I find myself playing with the levels and contrast on the color images before desaturating. Then when I go to levels again after desaturating it is all chopped up. Is that because I played with the levels in color first? Is it better to desaturate right away and then edit on the b+white image?

Also, does anyone have tips on how to achieve an infrared effect in PS? I remember going to someone's website a while ago that had a good tutorial, but I can't remember who? Thanks.

I've got a couple of pages bookmarked which Gordon posted up a while ago that you might find useful:

The way I tend to do it (from the info given on these pages) if I'm converting to B&W is to go into the gradient mixer and tell it to convert to monochrome and then play with the levels ther until I get the desired effect.

I too saw a page about infrared conversion a while ago but sadly didnt bookmark that one so can't help there. Hope these help.
