I've noticed, while looking at some of the recently ended challenges, that alot of comments are made about the DOF of a photograph. Even when it is clear that the DOF was minimized purposely to draw one thing into sight or make a dramatic statement.
I guess it just frustrates me as an avid lover of responsibly used DOF. I find it sad that even though that's the look that the artist was looking for, its valued low because some people think a god picture has to include everything that there is to see.
Poor DOF can be fantastic it the picture's subject is interesting enough. I find that true of many of the low scoring pictures that are commented after again and again demanding more DOF.
Sorry...just a note to self.

Hi Coley3,

All I can say is... welcome to DPChallenge.

It helps when you consider that most of the commenters, however misguided, are well-meaning folks. The sad fact is that few people score on more than a gut reaction to an image--myself included. So, if they are in a commenting mood and they can't immediately find cause for praise, then shallow DOF is BIG target for a critical remark.

Commenters are learning too.

I usually respond to one or more of the comments within the image's discussion thread -- you can quote it just like in the forums -- sometimes explaining why something the person didn't like was deliberate. Not to persuade them to like it, but only to help them understand that such "features" may be intentional, so that their future comments will have that context. They may still not like it, but they'll be more inclined to say that (and why), rather than making an off-putting comment about your "mistake."

Plus, once the use of such a technique is explained, they may come to appreciate it after all ...

If I do quote someone's comment, I'll usually send them a thank-you note as a PM, and say that I responded to their comment in the thread.

Thanks guys. I never doubted anyone's intentions and I'll just have to remember that we're all learning. There are some really fantastic photographers here and I look forward to learning from all of them.

The commentor may be expressing their opinion that they think it would be a better photo with a different DOF. It is not saying that the photographer was wrong or didn't know what they were doing, just that they would have done it differently. Some people just don't like shallow DOF, that doesn't make them wrong.
