Just tried out serif PhotoPlus 5.5

Seems to have pretty much all the image editing features you could need to enter dpc.

Supports saving to a variety of JPEG sizes, with a preview display of the final image size (making it trivial to save optimially under 150k, in one step.

Has all of the colour adjustments that are legal. Has all of the legal filters, plus many non-legal ones.

Has adjustable brush types, (spacing/ angle, shape/ size/ opacity) and various blur/ sharpening filters and supports layers and transparency.

and it costs nothing and doesn't appear to have any limitations/ time trials or the like.

Download link here

Yes they will sell you a more advanced version, but version 5.5 has everything you need to enter dpchallenge with the current rules, in the restricted or free editing categories.

I'd be interested in hearing how you got on with it. It isn't photoshop and as a result is probably a whole lot less of a PITA to use!

If you have PSP already, you dont need anything else to do the edits required here with the current rules, or for the propsed changes. No plug-ins, anything..PSP is pretty powerful...you do have to learn how to use it, this link PSP Photo editing Tips/Tutorials provides all the things necessary to make any edits that are allowed here on this site, along with ones that would be included in new rule changes. Its a great link worth bookmarking. Hope this helps :)

HELLO AGAIN! I don't need the links I know how to do these things, with the exception of one thing I haven't figured out how to effectively do with PSP following rules as of right now, but I know it can be done, i just haven't mastered it yet and never will have to learn to do it the right way if spot editing is allowed I can do it the wrong way! however I am not SELFISH there are others who don't know how to do these things...truthfully if you want those few editing options open up all editing options and see what happens...I prefer layering images for more depth...I also prefer working with masks and tubes with PSP so if you are going to change rules for one person are you going to change them for everyone?

I use PSP almost exclusively because I find it so intuitive compared to Photoshop. However, there are a couple of things available in Photoshop (standard duotones, for example) that make me keep it handy for occasional use.

By this point in the debate I really can't tell if you are just deliberately ignoring the point that is being repeatedly made or just trolling for the fun of it.

Limited editing/ open editing aside. The point always was and still is to create the best photograph you can produce. Picture tubes/ composite layers from other pictures etc are pretty obviously digital art and not within the scope of the current challenge, the spirit of the site or any proposed changes other than yours.

I also don't quite get where you think people who keep sharing new information and approaches, links to free new software, new tutorials and a host of other information for free are selfish. Seems a bit myopic to be honest.

When I mentioned layering and tubes I don't mean from one image to another image. Creating a tube of something in a photo that you want to being out more and layering it onto the orginal often brings it out more, as does creating a mask from a photo and layering the tube on top of the image it creates a depth that wasn't there previously.

i've yet to see the "others" that need help with these things speak up. i do see OSS appointing herself as spokesperson for these unseen masses, though. (sorry, but that seems to be the only point i can gather from your arguments.)

i am one of the ones that lives from paycheck to paycheck, spending a lot of time "robbing Peter to pay Paul". yet, i have managed to budget and save to afford the tools i need to further my photography skills. i have received a lot of advice and critiques on my photos and THAT is what has helped make me a better photographer...not the post-processing software that i choose to use.

imagination costs nothing...and the amount of post-processing that has been suggested (in the original thread) will not turn a bad photo into a good one...it will only make good photos better. only learning new things and challenging yourself will do that. try it sometime...you might like it.
